Whittemore Speedway / Factory Stock
Angola Motor Speedway / Street Stock

When registering for this event, you must declare the track (and class) where you compete the most with the car you are entering. If you race at a track not mentioned, contact us at 517-543-5202 for approval in advance.

Keep in mind, even though a Pure Stock is not competitive with a faster class car such as a Sportsman, it will still be competetive in the ABC Series since it will end up racing in a feature with other cars that run similar lap times. Nevertheless, Pure Stocks are allowed to make changes to their cars that they are normally not allowed, such as headers, tires, locked rear-ends, etc. You must keep within the limitations of what is allowed by the faster class cars. For those who choose not to make changes, they will still be competitive since they will be racing with other cars that run similar lap times. Your car with its capability, along with your driving ability, will determine the feature you will run in.

Cars that fit the rules from the above mentioned tracks/classes are allowed but with the following exceptions and limitations:

The following tires are allowed with no mixing:

McCreary/American Racer D265/60-15 (available at the track)
Hoosier 970
Hoosier 880
DOT Street Radial max 235 width, 60-75 series.
(brands and sizes may be mixed with DOT Street Radials)

4 inch minimum ground clearance on all parts of the car except the front crossmember, oil pan, bellhousing, and transmission, and any body part forward of the front tires (bottom of nose, front spoiler, air dam, etc.)

Steel wheels max 8 inch width (any offset)

6 inch maximum spoiler height measured from deck surface to top of spoiler.

Minimum weight 3000 lbs.
Weight is pre-race.

There is no left side or rear weight percentage rule.

Any intake manifold with one carburetor (2bbl or 4bbl) allowed.
Headers are allowed.
Mufflers are mandatory. Excessively loud exhausts are not allowed.
Single or dual exhaust, any size is allowed but must exit at a point located behind the driver.

All typical safety regulations must be followed for items such as seat belts, roll cages, racing seats, etc. These rules can be found in the Spartan Speedway rulebook and the Springport Motor Speedway rulebook addendum.

racer98
they are consolidateing cars like at the supershoe at Kzoo or xcars at Flat rock then the slow sportsman will be with the fast pure stocks instead of only having one or two pure stocks with a chance to win their divison every body will race with cars that are about the same speed no matter what kind of car it is

We now have a car entry form online for the MIchigan Cup. You can find it here: Car Entry Form

This is a form that you can print and then fill out and mail in. Or, on that same page, you'll find a link to an online form that you can fill out and submit immediately without having to print and mail.

Please get your entries in soon so I can get a ballpark figure on the potential car count. It will help in the planning.

The complete payout schedule will be posted soon.

this system works good at kzoo at the super shoe it's a lot of fun because you don't have to worry about being outclassed I have ran my sportsman aginst cars that are normally latemodels and done well and have had street stocks run away from me it dosen't matter what class they were running during the season if they time in about the same as me it makes for good tight racing all the way through the field and the track only has a few rules to check
BigEd
And PLEASE remember, with the ABC format, your qualifying time IS CRUCIAL!!!! Sandbagging will NOT be permitted!!!! We have transponders, and one of the best scorers in the world in Caroline Allen. I will guarantee you she will love nothing better than to catch you running under your time and issuing you a speeding ticket. She LIVES to be able to do that.

It is imperative that you qualify to best of your ability, or else this system will not work for you, but it will for Caroline!!!!

one year at the shoe the top 4 cars in the last chance were disquailfied all at once for going under their time

Great job Maurice in having everything spelled out to a tee. That way there is no surprises.

MaddMike
Lets say one of the pure stocks blows it in qualifying, or for some other reason knows his car is going to be faster. What are his options at that point? How would you scratch your time if you qualified in the slowest feature? Can't exactly expect them to run in the fastest feature, so...That's what I don't get. I think it's neat, but I'm curious about that.

Could the lap times in the heat races be used to bump up, or replace qualifying times somehow? so if you were blackflagged in your heat, maybe that could be your new time?

Maybe there's something already thought up...

Mike
racer98
I think the way it works is the fastest 16 in qualifiying are locked in the A and then the rest of the cars are lined up for heat races and then the features are lined up by each car's fastest lap either from quailfying or heat race

I had to read the system about 4 times and I think I understand now it seems cool it is simple after you understand what is happening

I'm assuming you are not talking about the V6 Pure Stocks, but rather the V8 rear-wheel drive Pure Stocks. The RWD cars will be racing in the ABC Stock Car series while the FWD cars will have a feature event of their own.

For the ABC series, first we have qualifying consisting of two laps. This locks in the top 12 qualifiers into the A-Main. They will start 1-12 but not necessarily in the order they qualified. The order will be determined following the results of the fast car dash for 4 of the cars and an 8 car qualifying race for the remaining 8.

At this point, we have a fairly good idea as to which cars will be starting in the A-main, B-main, and C-main as well as D, E, F, etc depending on the number of cars that show up. Keep in mind that some drivers may have had a bad qualifying run or not made a run at all. This is where the qualifying races come in. Keep reading...

Next, we take all the remaining cars that qualified 13th and slower along with the ones that did not make a qualifying run. They are lined up in qualifying races. These qualifying races will be one of the most interesting parts of the Saturday night races. A driver actually has a chance to better his qualifying time in order to make it into a higher main event. If his fastest lap in his qualifying race is faster than his qualifying run, that will be his new qualfying time. A driver has a chance to better his qualifying time in a qualifying race. Whichever is faster will be the official qualifying time.

Once the qualifying races have completed, we have a qualifying time for each and every car. So, we now know who races in each of the main events. The finishing order of the qualifying races will determine WHERE each car will start in their main event. This is all described in the ABC rules.

Saturday is important because everyone who qualifies and/or competes in qualifying races on Satuirday are locked into the main events. Spots are filled on Sunday according to Sunday qualifying times and/or Sunday qualifying races.

The speed cutoff points for each of the main events is determined on Saturday. For instance, if the fastest B-main car on Saturday runs 17.350, all cars qualifying faster than that on Sunday are qualifying for the A-Main. If there are more A-Main cars than we choose to run, there will be a second A-main for the non-qualifiers and the payout will be the same as for the B-main. The same goes for the other mains. So, all ABC cars get to run in a main feature event. However, for the best chance to qualify for the highest paying mains, it's best to show up on Saturday.

If a driver fails to make a qualifying run or race in a qualifying race on either Saturday or Sunday, then he will not start in any of the main events.

The Michigan Cup date scheduled for September 14-16 is turning out to be very good. Friday the 14th is for practice with all the racing on the 15th and 16th. On those two days, Saturday and Sunday, none of the following tracks will be racing: Spartan, Whittemore, Kalamazoo, Galesburg, M-40, Toledo, Plymouth, New Paris, and Angola. On Sunday, Auto City, Dixie and Flat Rock are not running Baer Field runs on Saturday, but is not running Street Stocks or Modifieds that weekend. M-40 had their "Last Call Jones" show scheduled for the 15th, but they made a decision to cancel it. Kalamazoo is running their show on Friday, so all the Modifieds that are running Kalamazoo's "Run what you brung" rules that day can come to Springport for Saturday and Sunday without changing anything.

I'm hoping to see many of the drivers from those tracks making their way to Springport Motor Speedway for the Michigan Cup. Auto City, Dixie and Flat Rock divers can come in as late arrivals on Sunday for the second round of qualifying.

Hope to see you all there.

Owosso Speedway has just revamped their Championship Weekend schedule for the 14th-16th. They have decided to condense the Saturday and Sunday show and run it all on Saturday.

This means that anyone who is running for points at Owosso will now be able to come to Springport on Sunday, the 16th, for the second round of qualifying.

I hope to see some of the Owosso cars and drivers at Springport for the Michigan Cup. All the Modifieds, Street Stocks, Pure Stocks, and FWD Mini Stocks are invited to come and compete.

The Michigan Cup is Back!
September 14-16
It's been 8 years since the last Michigan Cup event was held at Springport Motor Speedway, then known as Michigan Ideal Speedway. It was an annual tradition and touted as one of the premier short track events held in Michigan each year. It's back on the schedule and is slated for September 14-16, with the main feature events on Sunday, the 16th. But be sure not to miss the Saturday night show as drivers from all over Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana compete for starting positions in Sunday's events. The qualifying races can be just as interesting as the features.
Competing at the Michigan Cup will be the Super Mini Cup Series, the MCR Dwarf Series, the VROA Vintage Modifieds, the Pony Stocks, and the FWD Pure Stocks. We'll also have drivers from all over competing in the ABC Stock Car Series. This series will include our own Sportsman and RWD Pure Stock drivers as well as Sportsmans, Street Stocks, and Pure Stocks from other tracks in the tri-state area. And to top it off, we'll also have the Modifieds on hand competing with no rules. It's "Run what you brung" for the Modifieds. They will entertain you with Sprint Car wings, sideboards, big tires, and anything else they can think of. It's no holds barred for these guys.

The Tommy Bowles / Bob Secord
Memorial Race
September 15-16
The ninth annual Tommy Bowles Memorial Race originally scheduled for July 14 at Auto City Speedway was rained out. It has since been rescheduled to run on Sunday, September 16, at Springport Motor Speedway during the big Michigan Cup weekend of events. In addition, this special race will also be known as the first annual Bob Secord Memorial Race. The race features the MCR Dwarf cars and drivers as they honor Tommy Bowles and Bob Secord.
Tommy Bowles, nicknamed "Ten Grand", was a three-time MCR Dwarf Champion from 1996-1998. In 1998, he won the Dwarf Car World Series title and was trying to repeat in February of 1999 during Speedweeks in Florida when he was tragically killed.

Bob Secord passed away in February of this year and was the Race Director for the MCR Dwarf Series at the time of his death. In the past, he has served as Crew Chief for Paul Gentilozzi as well as building engines for Rocket Motorsports. He was also affiliated with Jaxsports in the construction of the MCR Dwarf cars at one time.

Qualifying and heat races for the Tommy Bowles / Bob Secord Memorial Race will be held on Saturday, September 15th, with the feature event on Sunday, the 16th.

For a complete schedule of weekend events, see the Michigan Cup Schedule and Rules.

Hi Jerry,

That flyer is for the public and indicates general admission side gate times.

Maybe I should include the pit side gate times on it as well to avoid confusion. I'll add them real quick and switch flyers.

One disadvantage is that second round qualifiers on Sunday will start behind the first round qualifiers from Saturday.

Another disadvantage has to do with the ABC Stock Car Series. The number of mains and how many are lined up in each one is determined on Saturday. For instance, if Saturday's turnout determines that we will run 3 main events (A, B, and C), then that's how many we will run. If a Sunday qualifier runs faster than the fastest B-main qualifier, he will qualify for the A-Main. However if there are more A-main qualifiers on Sunday than there are available spots, we will have a second A-Main, but it will pay the same as the B-Main. We will add additional spots to any main, if necessary to try and accomodate everyone as well as we can.

If there is something like 90-100 ABC cars on Saturday, then there will be 5 mains with 18-20 cars in each one and 4-6 available spots and maybe more depending on Sunday's turnout.

This is a very flexible plan and it's hard to predict how it will turn out until it actually takes place. That could be the most interesting part of this weekend.

Most importantly, if you would like to race at the Michigan Cup, and if we have a class for your car, show up either Saturday or Sunday and we will do our best to get you in the show.

The biggest, as stated above, will be having to start behind the Saturday qualifiers. Maurice purposely did it this way to be able to accommidate the drivers from Auto City, Dixie, and Owosso that are running on Saturday. If you get there by Noon Sunday, you'll have a couple hours for practice, get a qualifying lap, and run in a feature.

If I can get my motor back this week I'll be there Sunday for sure with the wing. I've got the darndest luck some years, I hurt the motor at the Zoo Saturday.....

Thats a pretty big penalty. if you have 18cars that start in front of you. Thats a long trip to start in the back regardless of how you qualify. I understand why you do it but it's a little much to overcome.

But Chad, look at it from a drivers standpoint that is there on Saturday, and qualified when they are suppose to. If we let drivers just come in on Sunday and start anywhere else in the feature, there is no incentive to even be there on Saturday, and the qualifying races run on Saturday are useless. Most drivers that I have spoke to about this are just very happy that they will be able to participate in a feature event. And it's anyones guess as to what may happen. A lot of drivers not familiar with Springport, a few cautions, and you could be right up front.

When I worked at Owosso, and we held the Nationals, we allowed the same thing. And I watched Jay Woolworth one year almost win his race from the rear. I've also been to these multi-day events and seen drivers come in on Sunday and not qualify, but just go to the back of a last chance race, and then be done for the day, no feature. If you come on Sunday, you WILL run a feature on Sunday!!!!

Camping at the Michigan Cup
Camping is free on the speedway grounds during the Michigan Cup weekend. All we ask is that you clean up after yourselves and keep the noise to a minimum during the wee hours of the night. There is a big dumpster located at the rear of the spectator parking lot where many of the campers will be set up. Also, during the day, anyone camping over on the side in front of the pit entrance can take their trash and place it in the dumpster near the scale house.
On Friday and Saturday night, the main gate will be open with access to the restrooms on the grandstand side all night long. The pit area will be locked but will have security all night.

Small campfires will be allowed provided they are kept under strict control. Pallet wood and other types of wood with nails or any other hardware will not be allowed for burning. Please keep our grounds safe so we may continue to allow this year after year.

For a more pleasurable weekend camping experience, be sure to check out ROCKEYS CAMPGROUND which is just a few miles from the speedway. It's located on a chain of 5 lakes with lots of fun stuff for everyone. Call (517) 857-2200 for more info.

The Old Mill Restaurant in nearby Eaton Rapids has become a hangout after the races on Saturday nights and this weekend is no exception. The Old Mill will be open 24 hours on Friday and Saturday to cater to the Michigan Cup crowd with breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They will also stay open a little later on Sunday night following the feature events. The Old Mill Restaurant is located at the north end of downtown Eaton Rapids.

I said I understand why, but we would have to do alot of work sat to get there sun. to start in the back. Im not complaining, we just cant put in the night it will take to make it there to start in the rear. I wish we could cuz I do like springport, but we have a big fish to fry sat night at AC.

In the ABC Stock Car rules for the Michigan Cup, I stated that the wheels must be a maximum of 8" wide. I've had a couple of phone calls from drivers who only have 10" wheels and they wanted to know if they could run them.

I'm glad they called first rather than just showing up with them. So, after thinking about it, I decided to allow 10" wheels but with a weight penalty of 100 lbs. I think that's a fair trade off and personally don't see any advantage with mounting up an 8" tire on a 10" wheel.

And I understand your point also my friend. With all the politics of winning a championship and all, just thought it may be nice for y'all to come and race for some FUN. But maybe sitting in the stands with a barley pop might be in your best interest too. Either way, if you make it out, come up and let me know your there.

And bring some of that fish your frying Saturday if you have any left over. Nothin like fresh smoked fish!!!

In the pits on Sunday morning, there will be a pancake breakfast which will be hosted by the Springport Fire Department. This will take place from 9AM until around 11AM or so.

There will be pancakes and sausage ( I think bacon too, but don't hold me to that ), coffee and orange juice.

There will be a small fee with all proceeds and any additional donations going to the Fire Department's fund raiser.
