WHITTEMORE — A 49-year-old man died after he apparently lost control of a race car during a test drive at Whittemore Speedway and crashed, officials said.

Donald Kotarski of Millington crashed the car Saturday afternoon, according to Michigan State Police from the East Tawas Post. He was taken to St. Joseph Hospital in Tawas, where he was pronounced dead.

Speedway officials said Kotarski appeared to lose control of his car, which left the track and crashed into a dirt embankment before coming to rest against a metal post, The Bay City Times reported.

Whittemore is located in Iosco County, about 133 miles north of Detroit.
