Brian Campbell (Dixie Motor Speedway) and Mother Nature (Owosso Speedway) win the 3rd Annual Mid-Michigan Doubles Weekend.
By ASA Late Model Series
Ovid, Michigan (08/19/2007): The Fifth Race of the 2007 Racing Season in the ASA Late Model Series Northern Division Presented by GM Performance Parts was completed at the Dixie (MI) Motor Speedway while the Sixth Race of the season at the Owosso (MI) Speedway saw all of Practice and Qualifying completed before steady Rain Showers throughout the late afternoon and into the evening forced ASALMS Officials to cancel the Great Lakes 100.
The historic 0.400 Mile Progressively Banked Paved Oval of the Dixie Motor Speedway, located North of Flint and South of Saginaw, in Birch Run, Michigan served as hosts for the Wolverine 100 on Friday August 17, 2007 for the Fifth Race of the 2007 Season in the ASALMS Northern Division as a packed house on hand witnessed a very entertaining 100-lap Feature in Eastern Michigan.
Brian Campbell passed race long leader, Peter Cozzolino with six laps to go and from there, the Wyoming, Michigan driver held off Rookie of the Year title contenders, Jesse Saunders and 15-year-old Alex Kennedy to win the Wolverine 100 for his second ASALMS Northern Division Feature Win of the season to go with his 27th to 1st Place run at the O’Reilly (IN) Raceway Park at Indianapolis back on April 28, 2007.
Then the next day at the Owosso Speedway, Mother Nature paid a visit and unfortunately would take all of the racing action in Ovid, Michigan. Before the rains came and in ARP Bodies/Aluminum Racing Products Qualifying, Peter Cozzolino shattered the ASALMS track record as the Indianapolis, Indiana veteran turned a fast 15.285 which measures out to 94.210 MPH. The old track record was held by 2003 USPRO Cup Series (Now ASALMS Challenge Division), Champion Mark Kortz, who previously held the record with a 15.582.
All Qualifying Points as well as Autograph and Show-Up Points will be awarded for this event, which ironically will see a new points leader! Peter Cozzolino now takes the lead by a single point by virtue of his first ARP Bodies Fast Qualifier Award of the Season. The Hoosier State veteran now leads ASALMS Northern Division Rookie of the Year Points Leader, Dave Gentile Jr., by that single marker (782-781). The Great Lakes 100 will not be made up in 2007!
In USPRO Cup Series Qualifying, one of the original members; Saginaw, Michigan Driver, Shaun Whitney turned in the fastest lap of the day as he turned a 15.473 which equals out to 93.065 MPH. This event as well will not be made up. Look for information concerning the return of the USPRO Cup Series full-time for the 2008 season in Late October 2007.
At Dixie, a pair of 19-year-olds, Nick Neville and Steven Brooks led the star studded 27-car field to Chief Starter, Tom Powell’s green flag to begin Day I of the 3rd annual Mid-Michigan Doubles Weekend Presented by the Michigan Racing Scene and Turn One High Performance Steering.
After only one lap, the first of seven caution flew on that first lap when 17-year-old Phil Gill and Trent Snyder, who came into the Michigan weekend, second in the season long points chase, collided coming down the front stretch. Snyder, who was sporting some cosmetic damage, was awarded his position back in 16th while Gill was done for the evening.
On the restart, Neville was trailed by a fast moving Peter Cozzolino who immediately began applying pressure to the Sophomore competitor, who was leading his first career laps in ASALMS competition. On Lap Five, Cozzolino drove around the outside of Neville to take the lead and began pulling away from the rest of the pack.
A caution on Lap 12 flew when Keith Herp spun coming out of Turn Two. During the caution period, the Turn Two lights went out, forcing ASALMS Officials to throw the red flag while Dixie Motor Speedway Officials went to work to repair the electrical problem. After a 25-Minute delay, the lights returned and the green waved again with Cozzolino showing the way as Jesse Saunders pulled up behind the Indianapolis, Indiana veteran.
The next 58 laps were run under green flag conditions as several drivers jockeyed for position. During that time, Saunders threw every trick he could think of at the crafty Hoosier State veteran as Saunders pulled up along-side Cozzolino on several occasions and tried several times to use lapped cars as a pick to get by for the lead, but to no avail.
In the meantime, Brian Campbell, who started seventh, patiently worked his way up to third and made it a three car battle. Campbell then managed to sneak by Saunders and set his sights on Cozzolino. A caution flew on Lap 71 for Dave Gentile Jr., the Overall and Rookie Points Leader went sliding into the infield.
On the restart, Trent Snyder, who was involved in the Lap One incident and started 16th, worked his way past Saunders and into the third spot to join Cozzolino and Campbell and the battle was on for the lead. On Lap 84, Mike Osgar’s night ended when he slammed the Turn One wall with heavy contact. He was ok, but done for the evening.
Another restart saw Cozzolino, Campbell, and Snyder pull away to battle with Rookie Jesse Saunders and 15-year-old Alex Kennedy joining the trio up front. Campbell made his move with 10 laps to go and pulled up along-side Cozzolino as they two veterans battled for the lead running side by side all the way around the racy 0.400 Mile Progressively Banked Paved Oval as the crowd stood on their feet screaming for the leaders.
Campbell finally go by for the lead on Lap 95 as Snyder tried to follow through to pass Cozzolino as well. Cozzolino and Snyder collided coming down the front stretch resulting in Snyder turning sideways and tagging the Turn One wall in almost the identical spot where Osgar hit 12 laps previous! Snyder’s car was destroyed and the dejected driver was done for the night. ASALMS Officials sent Cozzolino to the rear of the field setting up a four lap shootout.
Campbell led two rookies, Saunders and Kennedy to the green flag and Saunders knew he had one shot to get by the home state driver! His effort was for naught though as on Lap 98, Bob Varney spun coming down the front stretch, killing any momentum Saunders built up in the two green flag laps before the final caution.
On the final restart, Campbell, in his Boyne Machine/Chevrolet Monte Carlo was determined to hold off the two hard-charging rookies behind him as the 28-year-old fought off one last charge from both Saunders and Kennedy to give the Wyoming, Michigan driver his second ASALMS Northern Division Feature Win of the 2007 season!
Saunders then had to fight off a last second charge from the 15-year-old Kennedy for second as both drivers posted career high finishes! 19-year-old Nick Neville finished a season high Fourth while 2006 ASALMS Northern Division Champion, 18-year-old Jesse Smith cracked the Top Five.
Derek Neville began the second five by finishing Sixth as Three rookie were next; Mike Heiss, Steven Brooks, and ARP Bodies/Aluminum Racing Products Fast Qualifier, Troy Hintzsche trailed and were followed by Charlie Menard, who recovered from an earlier incident with seven laps to go to complete the Top 10.
Earlier in the afternoon in ARP Bodies/Aluminum Racing Products Qualifying, ASALMS Northern Division Rookie of the Year title contender, Troy Hintzsche powered the only Mopar Powered Crate Engine in the field to his first career ARP Bodies Fast Qualifier Award as the Malta, Illinois driver in his Dekalb Seed/Dodge Charger turned a 15.487 which measures out to a fast 103.669 MPH.
Back at Owosso Speedway and for the rest of ARP Bodies Qualifying, Peter Cozzolino broke the track record with a 15.285 while Brian Campbell, who was the winner of the Wolverine 100 at the Dixie (MI) Motor Speedway the night before, was second quick with a 15.458 while Three consecutive Rookies completed the Top Five; Jesse Saunders turned a 15.489 while Mike Heiss went a 15.520, and Troy Hintzsche timed in with a 15.540.
15-year-old Chad Finley (15.547), from near-by DeWitt, Michigan was sixth while 2003 USPRO Cup Series (Now ASALMS Challenge Division) Champion and former Two-Time Owosso Speedway Super Late Model Track Champion, Mark Kortz (15.569) was next. Reigning ASALMS North Rookie of the Year, Derek Neville (15.597), Trent Snyder (15.633), and 2006 ASALMS Northern Division Champion, 18-year-old Jesse Smith (15.639) were the Top 10. There were 28 ASALMS Northern Division teams competing in Ovid, Michigan.
In USPRO Cup Series qualifying, Current Bollhoff Rivnut Super Pro Series Points Leader, Tommy Cook was second fastest with a 15.556 while ASALMS Northern Division Overall l and Rookie of the Year Points Leaders, Dave Gentile Jr., was next at a 15.580. Dennis Rederstorf was fourth with a 15.603 and Josh Nelms completed the Top Five with a 15.773. There were 13 USPRO Cup Series competitors on hand!
