Hey ya'll,
this is Texas Race Girl with another hot one from NASCAR.com....
Should Gordon Have Won the Championship?
Well, in order to even validate that question you have to consider this:
Johnson- wins 10-Top-5s 20-Top-10s-24 Poles 4 DNFs 4 Lead-Lap Fin. 26 Laps Led 1,289 Avg. Start 9.8 Avg. Finish 10.8
Gordon-Wins 6-Top-5s 21-Top-10s-30 Poles 7 DNFs 1 Lead-Lap Fin. 32 Laps Led 1,300 Avg. Start 11.3 Avg. Finish 7.3
I believe the numbers say it all, Gordon beat Jimmie in everything but wins....does that tell you something?
maybe that fulfills the prophecy made earlier in the season about...if I recall it went something like this...
'Wins matter more than consistancy'
...Jimmie held the lead mostly throughout the chase after getting on top because of wins. Wins is what won the championship, not consistancy, otherwise, Gordon would be the champ...
that's just my opinion, let's hear yours!
thanx again guys...

I think the Chase will have a "victim" every year; a racer who dominates the first 26 races of the year outside the Chase but then is not able to win the championship through the Chase... Between the two Hendrick cars they totally dominated the entire season. In Nascar, or any dedicated points series not weekly bull-rings, I like to see the guy who wins the most win the chapmionship. You can't look at total stats for the year anymore. It doesn't count.
However, if there wasn't a "chase", and the old system was used, here's the results according to a posting compiled on jayski.com:
(Traditional Points...the old way, not the Chase)
1) #24-Jeff Gordon 5455
2) #48-Jimmie Johnson 5102, -353
3) #20-Tony Stewart 4749
4) #17-Matt Kenseth 4718
5) #11-Denny Hamlin 4623
6) #5-Kyle Busch 4585
7) #99-Carl Edwards 4574
8) #07-Clint Bowyer 4556
9) #31-Jeff Burton 4549
10) #2-Kurt Busch 4371
As you can see, Jeff Gordon would be the champion under the old method.
Under the new method, a driver can totally dominate the first 26 races, win them all, and then get beat out in the final 10 races.
The first 26 races have nothing to do with the championship, they are just qualifying races. If a driver can start each race, do OK, not have any DNF's, he can have a chance to race for the championship.
I've always had mixed feelings about this "chase" thing. I think NASCAR should probably scrap the idea and go back to the old method. But there are other things I think NASCAR should change as well. Don't get me started...

Didn't this happen to Jeff G the 1st year of the chase as well. It seems like I remember hearing that by old points he would have one before as well.

As far as I am concerned Jimmie should never be a Champion but that is just my opinion, I just don't like the guy and have little respect for him as a driver or a person. Now his crew chief, Chad I like and think is one of the best in the business.
Jeff, I like as a person and respect as a driver. Steve LaTarte on the othe hand would not be half as good without Chad's help.
The Chase still needs work if they are keeping it but if they went back to the old straight system then it also would need work so no one driver/team can run off with the championship so early in the season. The points given need to be tighter, closer together.
And get rid of the top 35 in owner points guaranteed to be in the race, make everyone have to qualify for position to get in and/or increase the number of cars allowed to race each week.
Get rid of the COT and impliment the safety features in the old cars minus the front splitter.
Nascar needs to bring some excitment back to the whole thing.

I think Jeff should have won. The playoffs are meant for stick and ball sports, not racing. This years chase was super boring for me. (now Jeff winning the championship without the chase by over 300 pts may be boring also LOL)

I believe you have to have a total package....wins, top 5, 10's as little DNF's as possible laps led.........CONSISTANCY!!!!! ....Even with Jimmies 10 wins, by the old points system he still wouldn't have won it.....someone show me otherwise. I remember Rusty winning 10 and then 8 or vise versa and not winning it. Ryan Newman...8 wins, many polls...no championship. The guy with the most wins doesn't always win the title! Remember when everyone said Gordon was NASCARS boy?????? Think about that one for a minute...he got robbed of 2 championships since this chase started.

Everybody pissed and moaned when Kenseth won the championship with only one win in the season, and that wins should count more, well here it is you may not like JJ but he blew everyones doors off, his cars were good but he drove his ass off to win and not just finish, to me that is the sign of a champion, Jeff Gordon finished second thats the way it is, these guys can go race in another series if they want, but they all come back to NASCAR, and there aint one racer out there who honestly wouldnt give their right nut to race Cup, no matter how much you guys bad mouth and complain about it..Bruce (In Nascar and proud of it)

I'm sure they wouldn't race anywhere else..........who the hell besides NASCAR pays the drivers the money they actually deserve?
I know Bruce, you are on the inside things look different there, but if NASCAR is concerned for the fans....they sure don't show it because they have alot of them pissed of!!!!

I don't think anyone is looking at it from the drivers or teams perspective. Obviously, me sittin my ass behind this computer doesn't make me even qualified to wash a cup car! I think this thread was started as a way for FANS to DISCUSS whether we THINK Gordon should have won.........period! Not whether I think I can compete on a national level with these guys!
You know.......I see alot of this stuff anymore. Discussion means discuss a topic, it doesn't mean anyone should come in and say....you're an ass because this or that is your opinion...blah blah blah. Maybe you don't share the same opinion, GREAT, that's why we live in America! But please share your opinions without arming yourself with vailed insults or sarcasm. Well said Rob,
and by the way,
One might be surprised how well some on this site may do given the package, support and talent that comes with a cup ride.
have a good day,
