This is from a Sports Illustrated article. Can anyone confirm that midgets are running 800 horse power?
The Chili Bowl:
This event is a hidden jewel. Scheduled for Jan. 12 in Tulsa, Okla., the race will include NASCAR stars Stewart, Kahne and Ryan Newman. The Chili Bowl is one of the most unique races in America as champions from various circuits race 800-horsepower midgets on an indoor, quarter-mile dirt oval. The event sold out last summer and will be televised on HBO Pay-Per-View.

The ones with a 4cyl? Sure sounds impressive though.

That's what is causing me to question the statement. That seems like a lot of horse power for a naturally aspirated 4 cylinder.

Maybe its the combined horsepower of the entire field.

says the guy with the motorsackle engine.
sounds like they think sprints and midgets are all the same, typical mainstream media.

I know alittle bit about midgets as I used to run a VW powered midget backin the good ole days (and it kicked chevy II ass) but I know for a fact that someone at SI has never been to a midget race! Bob East has the cutting edge technology on midgets, and he's getting 410 hp on a really good day. But when you figure power to weight ratio, thats a scary fast number. Before anyone writes back that I'm wrong on the hp number, thats usable hp, not dyno hp.

I'm not going to write back and dispute the 410 HP at all,,,,, I'm going to dispute the fact that Bob East is the Midget man,,, Beast hasn't done anything new in 4 or 5 years.. Yes there are a lot of them out there,, all of them the same,, that is why they all run together.

I don't think a midget with 800 hp would even stay on the ground. I think it would take flight.

Wbta, I'm curious the difference between "usable" HP and "dyno" hp?
I doubt anyone is close to 400 hp yet, but they are getting some good numbers out of those things now. I guess anyone can make their dyno read whatever they want by changing the correction factor. The best I've seen is 384. That is with standard correction. SAE correction is about 350 hp. That is still pretty good out of a 166 ci. Of course that is all "dyno" hp.
Look for John Godfrey and Spike chassis to make a run at Bob East on the pavement next year. Stewarts team will have 3 of them.
