Full Version: Changes in NASCAR

I was listeneing to the NASCAR Station on Sirius the other day and I forget who the show host was but he put out a question to the public.

The question was: If there was one thing that you could change about the way things are done in NASCAR, what would it be.

I found it kind of interesting listening to the reponses and comparing them to the thoughts of the long time dyed in the wool NASCAR fan who remembers the days of Fireball Roberts, Richard Petty in his heydey, DW as a brash loud mouthed rookie pi$$ing off the old guard and the thoughts of the newer generation of NASCAR Fan that only knows the sport as it is in the last ten or so years.

The one thing that I would change is to get rid of the top 35 start the race rule. Top 35 start based on qualifying time, period. Positions 36 - 42 would be made up of anybody in the top 35 that didn't make it on speed. If any spots are left then it would be entry blank date and 43 would be the past champion's provisional. Actually, someone called that suggestion in and I agree with what they said. Although I do understand NASCAR"s reasoning behind the rule, I still don't agree with it.

Not wanting to necessarily knock NASCAR, it is their playground and if you want to play in it you play by thier rules just like any short track, series, or sanction.

I just thought it might be an interesting topic to take us through the doldrums of winter and to Daytona in a month or so.

.... DW as a brash loud mouthed rookie ....

The only thing that has changed there is DW is now an OLD brash loud mouth! That guy drives me insane.

The one thing I would change is the COT. The things remind me too much of IROC. If NASCAR keeps going this way, teams will no longer own cars, they will lease them from NASCAR.

The top 35 rule doesn't really bother me anymore. The one thing I would do is set up a 2nd points system for the non 35. If you finish as the best of the rest, you are gauranteed a starting spot in the first 5 races of the following season (yes, it would then be the top 36 for 5 races).

As a dream, I would like to see and old school night. NASCAR runs a progressive show with a 100 lap feature at the end of the night. Now that would be a hoot.

eliminate the top 35 rule! after hearing alot about the big investment the "premier" teams have why doesn't anyone consider the smaller teams investment! it is subtantial, and being denied a spot when they are faster than a gauranteed team is just WRONG!! RACING IS ABOUT RACING not catering to any privledged "upper class citizens" that is what grew nascar.

I'll go along with Denny. How many times did you see a guy qualify in only to be bumped by some one who did not?

I used to be a Nascar fan,

But now i only watch the Daytona 500, plus a few others. I have trouble relating to the NEW nascar.

I wish NASCAR would be honest and just implement its future policy's now,,,such as,,

No driver will be allowed to compete if hey have ever had a real job and had to punch a time clock.

No driver will be allowed to compete if they have been a winning Dirt LM or Mod racer.

No driver will be allowed to compete who know how to weld, or fabricate, or build engines.

No driver will ever be allowed to compete that does not come with their own funding from a rich daddy or rich sponsor.

No driver will be allowed to compete who is above 35 years old. and Only drivers who have started racing cup cars at the age of 18 will be allowed to compete.

No team will own their cars or engines,,,they will be leased from Nascar. All engines will be Sealed by nascar.

all drivers are the employee of NASCAR and can lose their ride at anytime Nascar chooses.

Nascar will rig the rules for races and championships to benefit NASCAR.

No new teams will be allowed, you will have to buy out an old team in order to compete.

NASCAR only race on 1/2 miles except for Daytona and have some dirt races also.

My rule change would be like the old days. You want to run it they need to build it.

That would take care of the COT debate and lots of others. The body would need to be built as delievered from the manufacture. Any new car model would be legal but the car MUST be run with a production block and a set of production heads. If John Q. Public cannot order that set of heads and that block in that model car you can't run them. This would allow teams to build what they want while also limiting the horsepower production. The same would be applied to the transmissions and rear ends.

This would also apply to the FWD and RWD cars. If you want to run an Avenger you run a FWD car, if you want to run a Charger you run a RWD car. This could make things VERY interesting.

That would make the races worth watching in my opinion.

There could be allowances for things like spoilers and wheels for safety but make certain that the car is something you can buy from a showroom.

I would like to see the races shortened up and run them at noon on sunday where they were when nascrap was popular.

Make mandatory swaybar size like 1 3/8 so I can relate to the setup. If I put a 225 in the RR of my car it just pitches it loose on entry. Cup is running a 1000 to a 1400 on the RR. I don't run that heavy in the front of my car. Bring side bite back into the equation.

I say run them all like the Daytona 500.........qualify and lock the top 2 in to their positions. Race 2 heats to set the rest of the field. But only 75 mile qualifiers. Then run a 300 mile race max. Qualify on Friday, heats on Saturday, main on Sunday. You don't need happy hour, that would be the heat race. Run the heats right before the Nationwide race on weekends they are together. They could actually gain a little more of the TV market that way as well. The 400-500 mile races suck because they just ride for 350 miles and then race the rest. Shortening the races up will make each lap even more important and the racing should become more exciting.

We do'nt run 200mph,if we did we would have 1000-14000 springs on the right rear.

WoW.......that is a tough one!

I would have to say, the 'governing body of NASCAR'. Get rid of baby boy France, Pemberton, Helton, also Ms France-Kennedy and all the other "groupies" that hang out with them and influence their decisions.
Bring in a new group of people with a fresh prespective and an actual love of the sport. NASCAR does not need to be controlled by money-hungry egos that thrive on power.

Just my opinion!

I would get rid of the restrictor plates and mandate a 302 or smaller to keep the speeds down.
You'd still have that great V-8 sound, and the drivers would get their throttle response back.

Years ago GM lobbied to go to a 302 engine, and found out Jack Roush had already done a lot of development on the engine and was dominating SCCA racing with it. GM dropped the idea. But it would be a good idea now, GM has caught back up.

My change would be in the broadcast booths ........ ban all anouncers whose last name starts with a W.
