After driving all the way down to Fla. RJ won't let Bob Varney race! Talked to Bob little bit ago and Bob said RJ gave no explanation. He let Bob run practice and he was only middle of the pack with the new GM motor. Motor can't be it because, CRA has weight breaks for multiple types of motors. I wonder whats up?

I was told last night at the Auto City banquet that it was because of a aluminum motor. I don't know if this is true or not but, it sure would be a bummer to be in his shoes!

Hey Greg,
Congrat`s on the Championship, had to split early for work last night.
Varney ran the new 525hp carburated LS-1 motor in FL and yes it is all alum.
Looks like the crate motor of our future. They were told they could run it but I`m sure there were plenty of complaints so they were parked.

norm is that the same one we ran in Busch East? if it is its a piece of junk, we blew up 3 in 07, and every other team had failures too

Bruce,
This one is brand new, just unveiled at the ASA seminars a couple weeks ago. It is based off of the Corvette LS1 engine. The first one was in Varney's car. They were just shaking it down to see how it would perform.
In 2008 all ASA Challenge series cars will have this motor in it. The North and South series cars will run the current 604 crate for the indefinite future.

My understanding is that it is a ls1 corvette motor with electronic ignition, out of a vette...testing it this year, challenge in 09, and all asa divisions in 2010, but like I said that is they way I understood it from my source.

The one we used in Busch east was based on the LS1 and carburated, they had the fuel pump and distributor drive off the front of the motor here is a picture

Not quite the same, Bruce. No distributor on the new one.
Also, this will be purchased directly from ASA and no rebuilding process will be allowed. The motor will come ready to bolt in minus carb (if I am not mistaken). They do not have a yet but they said it should be considerably under $10,000. This is what they said at the ASA seminar anyway.
Motor is said to put out 545 h.p. and can be turned to 6700 RPM's. It weighs in 15 lbs. lighter than the 604.
Kyle, we were told, by Mr. Varney, that there were no plans to get rid of the 604 in the forseeable future and that the North and South would continue to run them for the forseeable future. I think that their rationale is to make the North and South series' into "feeders" for the Challenge series, and the Challenge series guys would use the 604 stuff this year and then they would have an opportunity to sell their 604 stuff to North and South guys.

Ah, well that makes me feel better...b/c I don't know about other crate motor guys, but its kind of frustrating to have new motor packages already! haha, I also thought this motor had a distributor on it....I also heard that you buy the motor once, and then for a small price *(couple of thousand), you "trade" your motor in for a new motor....this is all to make the challenge series really what it is supposed to be, the "elite division"...too bad we may not get good test results from Florida

You are correct 100% Mr. Hayden.
The CT525 carburated LS1 (Better known as the "Super Crate") will be the only allowed engine in the ASA Late Model Series Challenge Division beginning with the 2009 Racing Season. The current crate engine package will remain in the ASALMS Northern and Southern Divisions as well as the USPRO Cup Series for now and for the next several seasons.
There will be a press release announcing the ins and outs of the "Super Crate" in the near future....
Mr. Hayden, are you ready for Toledo yet?

Is this the engine?
Linky ~ Click Here............The original LS1 ASA engines were 'supposed' to be under $10,000 and by the time everything was said and done, they were more than $14,000. I would look for them to be in the same range........

Whooa here just a minute! I just found this thread. Let me give you the exact details and then let you make a decision. I invite Ron Varney to come on here and verify my account if it is any different than I suggest here.
I received an email from Ron Varney about coming to SpeedFest to test a new engine for GM. I contacted the other sanctioning body for the event (FASCAR) to get their feelings. Don Neron and I discussed it, and decided that because it was not eligible by the rules of the event, that we would not have them race, but if the wanted to come practice, and even qualify that was fine, but when the green flag dropped and car to car competition started, it would not be fair for them to be on the track.
I met with Ron in his booth at PRI (first week in december) and discussed this situation face to face...explained that they could come practice but not race. It was noted that day, that they would have to decide whether coming to Florida for just two days of practice would be worth making the trip. I commented that I understood, but the offer was still there for them to come down and practice only, if they wanted to. We had a great conversation...he said he understood.
Fast forward to the event...Bob practiced his car as previously discussed, and then suggested to officials he was going to race. When I got that word, I phoned Ron Varney who was on the property, and talked to him about it. He said he realized that they were just down there to practice, per our face to face conversation, and had stated that he would stick to that. He did say that they had hoped that once they were down there they might get the chance to race the car with the test engine, but understood that we were standing by our original decision, which SpeedFest officials felt was in the best interest of the event and the other competitors competing within the rules. It was a very cordial and positive conversation. No problem there at all.
No one was surprised by anyhing that happened. All parties knew what the options for Lakeland were as far back as December. I even gave the same information to Bob, face to face that same day at PRI. I remember it clearly because it was the same day that I met his lovely wife Gretchen for the very first time. Lets just say if Bob never wins another race, he can take solace in he got to keep the trophy queen!
I hope that clears the air a little bit.

Also, there were never any complaints by anyone in the pit area about the motor, because if any parties had questions they were told that it was not racing by the officials that knew from day 1 it was not competiting, only practicing. Also, it was not a hot topic of conversation in the pit area, because of the 45 cars that took times, Bob's test ride was usually in the bottom 5 times of the practice sessions. With a new chassis, new engine, and being down 75+ horsepower, I think the times were respectable.

RJ,
First,at no time did anyone badmouth anyone so we can get that covered right away. The conversation was brought up why he couldn't race and no explanation was brought out why so it was questioned why on the forum. I am glad you explained so there will be no unwarranted judgements made on what the deal was. Yes, Gretchen is a peach and my family and I are part of her fan club. Thanks for the reply.
