Besides the Charlie Ryan Jr. Memorial race and old timers night, it is also the first night of the antique and vintage race car weekend. Friday night, July 11th at Spartan, then Saturday at Springport with the vintage cars on the track from 12 to 4, and then Sunday back at Spartan. As of now I am planning to be there with my notebooks of photos and memorabilia. If you can make only one show during the year, this may be the one night to come. Thanks Marty Blume

Today is the day,
Let us all remember one of Spartan Speedway's favorite drivers, by fans and other drivers alike.
Chargin' Charlie Ryan was always a gentleman, as was Stan, and Brian Heeney was always a lot of fun to race with.
These Memorial Races are well deserved, for all,
have a good day,

Hey, can I get a little help from our detailed oriented members here. I know I should know this like the back of my hand, but I seem to be struggling today.
Who won the previous Chargin' Charlie Ryan Jr. Memorials????
Jeff Hackworth has won one of em, who else, and what year. Spartan archives don't cover a couple years. Help would be very much appreciated from me as I am feeling pretty stupid about right now.
Oh yeah, I need this info before 3pm today. Not asking much, huh??

Unfortunately I couldn't make it last night becaus of the powers that be at GM decided that everyone needs to work on Saturdays now. I was informed this morning that Jimmy Gallagher won the Memorial last night. Started somewhere around the 5th row, and took the lead around lap 11.

Here's a link to the final race on May 28 in 2004 that Charlie Ryan, Jr actually competed in:
Spartan Speedway - May 28, 2004The next day, Chargin' Charlie Ryan, Jr died of a massive heart attack.
Prior to May 28, there were 4 complete rainouts. Prior to those 4 rainouts, on May 7, 2004, the program got through qualifying and heat races, and then the rains came. The features were scheduled for a later date. Here's a link to the May 7 results which also shows the results of the makeup feature:
Spartan Speedway - May 7, 2004Of course, when the date came that the makeup races were held, Charlie Ryan, Jr was no longer with us. He was given credit for last place in the feature. If I remember right, his spot in the starting lineup was left empty as the green flag flew.
Here's an excerpt from the race recap for May 28 (actually written most likely on the 30th) by Michelle Spraque:
As all of you know, we lost our true friend and Super Late Model driver, Charlie Ryan Jr. to a massive heart attack at the young age of 40 on Saturday morning. Charlie’s last memories for all of us at Spartan Speedway will be the side-by-side battle with his brother, Tim for over 20 laps fighting for 7th place in the first race of the Six Pack Shootout. We were proud to have Charlie Ryan Jr. as the 2003 Mr. Gasket/ Hurst Cup Hard Charger Grand Champion for the entire United States as it is so fitting that “Chargin’ Charlie went out a Hard Charger Champion. Spartan Speedway’s family offers our condolences to the Ryan Family and the “Leslie Gang”. Spartan Speedway will never be the same without our “Chargin’ Charlie”- God Speed Chargin’ Charlie – God Speed!-Maurice

On August 20, 2004, there was a race that (if my memory is correct) was sort of a tribute to Charlie Ryan, Jr. Tim Fedewa drove Charlie's car in this race and Charlie's brother, Tim Ryan, won the feature. Here's a link to the recap:
Spartan Speedway - August 20, 2004I don't believe there was a memorial race in 2005. When the race in 2006 was announced (by you Ed over the PA that night) as the first annual Chargin' Charlie Ryan Jr Memorial race, I could have sworn that there was already one before that. It must have been the August 20, 2004 race that I was thinking about.

Well now I'm confused.
Jeff says he won the first one, Harry told Sean himself he won the second one, I remember Stehouwer winning last year!!!! And I just seen Gallagher win it this year!!!!
Charlie passed on May 29, 2004. We had his Memorial race the very next year, at least I thought we did, up until now!!! So that would be 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008, correct??
I'm confused!!!

According to the write up on Spartans site for the results on August 18, 2006 it says Jeff Hackworth won the first Chargin Charlie Memorial race. So going by that I would say there have been 3 run, 2006, 2007 and 2008. Won by Hackworth, Stehouwer and Gallagher.

Here we go again! I think you are more than confused, Ed. You've been testing those Jello Shots, haven't you?
Harry Foote Jr won the Harvest race in 2003. He has not won it since then. Charlie Ryan Jr was also in that 2003 race.
Harry Foote Jr won Racin' & Rockin' III in 2007. But that was at Springport of course, not Spartan. Could that possibly be the race you and/or Harry are confused with? Maybe Sean wasn't talking about the CCR Memorial race, but rather the R&R race and that may be where all this confusion has stemmed from. That was the only time the Supers ran at R&R.
There is another problem that may need dealing with. In Michelle Sprague's writeup for last Friday's race at Spartan, notice what she says:
The memory of Chargin’ Charlie Ryan Jr. lives on, as the 4th Annual Chargin’ Charlie Ryan Memorial race for Andrews Chevrolet Super Late Models, sponsored by B & L Truck Caps of Potterville, was run at the Spartan Speedway. Sixteen SLM’s lined up to run the 75 lap feature, Chargin’ Charlie Ryan style, with a total invert of the field. She said it was the "4th" annual CCR Memorial. So, when was the 1st one ran and who won it?
I claim that it was ran on August 20, 2004 and won by Charlie's brother, Tim Ryan.

Maurice,
I am not the one who said he won the CCR Memorial first, he did, he said that to Sean, not to me, but I did believe it. They were specifically talking abou the CCR race, I assume, this was not my conversation. I said that MAYBE he got that confused!!! No jello shots here.............................YET!!!!
I also understand this problem, which is why I am trying to get to the very bottom of this, so we can get it right, 100%. I am not trying to argue with anyone, and I evidently don't know for sure, or I wouldn't be trying so hard to get this 100% right. I feel pretty stupid about this already, it is something I should have known. And getting it wrong is pretty embarressing. I want to get it right, beyond a shadow of a doubt.
I do appreciate everyone's help in this matter.

Not to worry, Ed. I'm just trying to help here. I'm providing what I remember and also what I have researched. So, with that, here's a summary of what I believe is the way it is:
August 20, 2004 - Chargin' Charlie Ryan Jr Memorial - Winner: Tim Ryan
At the time, I believe this was just what it was, a memorial race and not intended to be an annual event.
2005 - No memorial race held.
August 18, 2006 - rescheduled from a July 14 rainout - Winner: Jeff Hackworth
This was announced that evening and also mentioned in the writeups as the 1st Annual Chargin' Charlie Ryan Jr Memorial race. This was most likely called the 1st annual because it was at that time decided that this event would run every year.
July 13, 2007 - Winner: Dave Stehouwer
The writeup does not specify 2nd or 3rd annual, but if I remember correctly, it was announced as the 2nd annual one.
I was at each of the above events. I was not at the most recent one:
July 11, 2008 - Winner: Jimmy Gallagher
This was written up as the 4th Annual Chargin' Charlie Ryan Memorial.
Did Michelle write that it was the 4th annual because maybe that was how it was announced that evening?

I was a car owner for Jimmy Thiel. I believe the 2004 race was in memory of Charlie. I do recall the feature was to be a complete invert? We were un able to make it due to medical iusses for me and Jimmy's dad. But we were really liking the ideal of a full invert for Charlie.
