The Dixie Motor Speedway to host the 2008 USPRO Cup Series Season Championships and the ASALMS Northern Division in an exciting twinbill!
Lexington, Michigan (02/15/2008): The ASA Late Model Series Northern Division Presented by GM Performance Parts completed its’ second season of competition in 2007. One of the most competitive divisions within the Lexington, Michigan based series in recent history, the ASALMS Northern Division is now looking ahead at the upcoming 2008 campaign.
One of those facilities that hosted an ASALMS Northern Division race last year was the site of one of the most exciting events of the 2007 season and is back on the schedule once again in 2008. Not only will the cars and stars of the ASALMS Northern Division heading back to this fine facility, but the USPRO Cup Series will also partake in there biggest weekend of 2008!
The ASALMS Northern Division and the USPRO Cup Series will both invade the fast 0.400 Mile Progressively Banked Paved Oval of the Dixie (MI) Motor Speedway, located North of Flint and South of Saginaw in Birch Run, Michigan on Saturday August 16, 2008.
The Eighth Race of the 2008 season in the ASALMS Northern Division, the Mid-Michigan Dixie Challenge 100 will co-headline the night with the USPRO Cup Series, who will crown their 2008 Champion and Rookie of the Year in the running of the 2008 USPRO Cup Series Season Championships 75.
Joining the ASALMS Northern Division and USPRO Cup Series will be Dixie Support Divisions “To Be Announced”. Both the Mid-Michigan Dixie Challenge 100 and 2008 USPRO Cup Series Season Championships 75 Entry Forms will be available beginning on Wednesday July 30, 2008.
“I honestly couldn’t think of a better place to crown our first USPRO Cup Series Champion and Rookie of the Year than the track that is closest to our home base in Lexington, Michigan!” Stated ASALMS Co-Founder / President, Ron Varney. “We want our USPRO Cup Series Teams to know that they mean just as much to us as our regular ASALMS divisions and on August 16th, that is there night to shine!” He added.
“The ASALMS Northern Division race at Dixie last season was one of our most exciting races of the entire 2007 season!” Varney continued. “This is going to be a great night! It’s close to home for us as a series, it’s on the Saturday night of NASCAR weekend in Michigan, and if last years race was any indication, the two Features will be very exciting to say the least.” He ended.
“We are very happy to have the ASALMS Northern Division back in 2008 and we’re very honored to be hosting the first USPRO Cup Series Season Championship race!” Dixie Motor Speedway Promoter, Mike Kern offered. “It’s going to be an exciting night to say the least. Both features will definitely be two of the highlights of our 2008 racing season!” Kern added.
In the ASALMS Northern Divisions’ only appearance back on August 17, 2007 a packed house on hand witnessed a very entertaining 100-lap Feature in Eastern Michigan as Wyoming, Michigan driver, Brian Campbell passed race long leader, Peter Cozzolino with six laps to go.
Then after a thrilling battle that also involved eventual 2007 ASALMS Northern Division Champion, Trent Snyder, Campbell finally got by Cozzolino for the lead, Cozzolino and Snyder, who came up to challenge both drivers, collided coming down the front stretch resulting in Snyder turning sideways and tagging the Turn One wall.
Campbell would then hold off Jesse Saunders and 15-year-old Alex Kennedy to win the Wolverine 100 for what was his second ASALMS Northern Division Feature Win of the 2007 season.
Saunders, the eventual 2007 ASALMS Northern Division Rookie of the Year, had to fight off a last second charge from Kennedy for second as both drivers posted career high finishes at the time! Nick Neville finished a season high Fourth while 2006 ASALMS Northern Division Champion, Jesse Smith rounded out the Top Five.
Troy Hintzsche powered the only Mopar Powered Crate Engine in the field to his first career Fast Qualifier Award over the 27-car field as the Malta, Illinois driver in his Dekalb Seed / Dodge Charger turned a 15.487 which measures out to a fast 103.669 MPH.
Dixie Motor Speedway has been a showcase of Auto Racing Talent from its beginning in 1948. Current Owners/Promoters, Mike and Krista Kern purchased the facility in 1996 and have made gradual improvements over the years.
The Birch Run, Michigan speed plant underwent a major face lift in 2003 with new state of the art lighting by Qualite Sports lighting and Helm Electric was installed in time for the debut of the 0.400 Mile High-Banked D-Shaped Paved Oval that surrounds the existing 0.333 Mile Semi-Banked Paved Oval.
In 2004, pit grandstands were put in the pit area across from the main grandstand, along with the new Pit Tech Facility that was built as well. In 2005 a hospitality pavilion was put in to accommodate company and group outings located South of grandstands while in the Fall of 2006 the Kern Family added 30 more parking slabs for the pit area along with extending the pit exit with new asphalt.
The 2008 season begins at the Birch Run, Michigan speed plant with a Driver Registration Party and Test and Tune From Noon-6:00pm on Saturday April 12, 2008. The historic Eastern Michigan facility hosts weekly racing on Saturday nights beginning on April 19, 2008.
A full program of Pro Late Models, Modifieds, and Sportsmen will be on the 4/10s mile while Factory Stocks and Bombers will take to the inner 1/3 mile. Finally the always exciting Figure 8s close out the Saturday night program that begins with racing at 7:00p.m.
In addition to the ASALMS Northern Division and USPRO Cup series, some of the traveling series’ that will visit Dixie includes; The Auto Value Super Sprints, MSA Super Modifieds, Michigan Legends Series, and Vintage Modifieds.
Another highlight of the 2008 schedule is the five race Dixie Cup Series for Outlaw Bodied Super Late Models. The five race series is the premier mini series for Outlaw Bodied Super Late Models in Michigan. Those shows are set for May 24, June 14, July 19, August 2, and September 6 which will decide the 2007 Dixie Cup Series Champion with the 43th annual Dixie Classic 150.
Plus a wide variety of special events are scattered throughout the schedule with Two Eve of Destructions Events featuring; Burnout Contests, Chain Gang Races, Dixie Crash Cars, Figure 8 Trailer Races, 4X4 Tug of Wars, Racetrack Bowling, Rollover Contests, and the ever popular School Bus Figure 8 races.
