I saw on the springport website, racin and rockin is on July26th. AutoCity doesn't race that night, so I was wondering what the payout is going to be for the modifieds and how many laps is the feature? Also is there a b-main?
Thanks,

p.s. Big Ed .. I have heard you announce for some time now and I have to say this ... I had to ask who was announcing at last years Racin n Rockin because that person was so *into* it that I didn't even recognize your voice ... an excellent job Sir .. keep up the good work ....

thanks
Gavin,
Not yet officially, Jim and I have yet to discuss it in any detail. I will try to do so soon, so that everyone can make plans accordingly.
I would hope that it is made special enough to attract the top flight teams and drivers, especially since there will not be any USA show's that date.
Will let all know as soon as possible. I do know this, the contingency amounts that have been traditional with this show have made it very lucrative for some mod drivers, ask Perry Davenport or Harry Foote.
And yes, it is my hope the same holds true for the rest of the classes as well.

All,
At this point in time, I have the following "money" information.
For the Modifieds:
The Third Annual Sylvia May Ott Mod Fast qualifier pot will be started out again with $100 sheckles coming from Schindewolf Racing for the fastest mod on the track in qualifying, in honor of my mother in law, who passed before she was able to watch me go racing. This fast qualifier pot grows as we get near to the race day, and grows on the race day itself with the "Add A Lap" fast qualifier contest, which is really simple, you qualify normally, then, if you are not satisifed, you hand me ten bucks a lap for up to two laps, ($20), then you scratch your original qualifying lap and take your chances to better your time. More rules on that to come, but that money goes into the qualifying pot of money and gets spread through the top qualifiers, last year paying down to eighth, with others adding contingency qualifying money to various positions. The first year of this Sylvia May Ott Fast Mod qualifier pot provided Perry Davenport with $360 bucks for turning the fastest lap of the day.
Last year, the payout was as follows:
1st = 225
2nd = 100
3rd = 70
4th = 50
5th = 45
6th = 45
7th = 45
8th = 45
10th = 60
I also have heard that the Hunyady's, Jan and Roger, will be adding money to this qualifying pot, as do many others as the day draws near.
We also now know that the modified winners purse is now larger by $100.00 thanks to Perry's biggest fan. So, given the current purse pay numbers as advertised on the Springport Motor Speedway site will be at least $370.00 for the winner, plus various contingency monies spread through the rest of the purse for the feature.
I've yet to be able to speak with Jim regarding if there will be a purse change, and I am working to try and find a Racing and Rocking Main Sponsor for adding money to all the payouts for all the classes that night. I want to be able to recognize and pay all classes more than is listed if possible, over and above what the track will ultimately pay, but I need to find that "Main" sponsor to be able to do so. If I find one, that money will be properly spread throughout all classes and positions, unless I am directed by the Main Sponsor to do otherwise.
I know I haven't posted much lately about R&R, but rest assured, many are already working on it, along with our day jobs, and our race cars, all getting ready for the season to begin.
And this much I pledge, I, along with the help of countless others, will do everything that can be done to make this one more time, "The Best Racing Moment Of The Summer".
But please, remember this, from the very original thought for this day and this race, Racin' and Rockin' was intended to be a way for those of us who race, and those of us who are fans of racing, and those of us who are the racing family itself, to have a mid season party, a night of fun racing and good food and a good party afterwards, with a chance for drivers, crews and fans to get together and get to know each other, and to let the fans put a face to the name of the racer or racers that they cheer on each and every week.
And I do not intend to lose track of that facet of this event. It isn't just about the purse, (although it obviously is important, we all have to be able to affort to make the trip and run the race,) it is about the fellowship and gathering of the racing family for a wonderful night of fun.
And as Dick so well put it,
"I got paid pretty well but money dissapears but I still have a flywheel on my wall that says it all."
Please plan on that date, and keep tuned, more info will be forthcoming as soon as I get my car done and running. Besides, my wife is already on my backside to get things underway.
By the way, the trophy's are getting done as we speak, thanks again to Master Blaster ( Craig Burke) Jan Hunyady and the Governor, who have all combined together each year to create a most memorable trophy for this event.
have a good day,

The part I love about Racing and Rockin is this. It's not all about the money for me. It's about bragging rights, getting one of the coolest trophies around. My goal is fast time, and trying for the ring gear. I'm aiming high but it's worth it. The first year was awesome, last year was just as good. It's about having fun and racin for the love of it. Then you get sit back drink some adult pop if you so choose, have some great food, and rock out to the Basement Dawgs. How much cooler can it get. Not to mention the mods are just a great show out there. Hope to see you there.

Jan,
I knew something wasn't totally right when I was writing that, but couldn't remember exactly what you sponsored. Yes indeed, every year it has been Hard Charger. In addition to the torphy work and other work that she does behind the scenes to make this event wonderful.
So, if you are piloting a mod this year, this is your event to make some serious fun money, 200 for Hard Charger in the Mod Division, a potential for some real serious money also for the Sylvia May Ott Fast Qualifier Pot, with the Add A Lap twist to it, an additional $100 to the mod feature winner from Perry's Biggest Fan, and that day, more and more comes.
For the other divisions, I will be doing an Add A Lap to your classes, at a minimum two laps for the Sportsman, at least one if not two for the Ponies and the Pures, dependent upon time. I am looking, seeking, begging, for someone to help provide a starter fund to help get pots going for those classes also, and in addition to the help that I get from everyone to put the event on, also looking for a Racin' and Rockin" Main Event Purse Sponsor to augment the monies the track has for class purses.
There really is an awful lot of work that is done behind the scenes to make this work, but honestly, the event itself makes it all worth it, for all of us that work to put it on. And I give thanks to those who have helped in thepast, and are already helping this year.
More info soon to come.

5 classes and 2 trophies per class = 10 people getting hardware to take home.

These are the official "Add A Lap" Qualifying Rules:
There will be "Add A Lap" sessions for the Mod's and the Sportsman, that will consist of two laps total you can purchase.
Ponies and Pures, at least one lap for the "Add A Lap" session for your classes, if there is enough time, maybe two, that will be decided on Race Day.
Order for "Add A Lap" will be as follows:
Modifieds will run First,
Sportsman Second,
Ponies will be third,
Pures will be fourth.
"Add 2 Laps" special qualifying is intended to give you, the driver, a chance to better your time and therefore, your starting position, etc.:
The rules for this session are as follows, no deviations: (keeps me out of trouble that way),
Mods and Sportsman, you can buy two extra laps for $10 a lap, and if you buy them and don't use them, you don't get your money back.
Ponies and Pures, at least one lap, maybe two, I will make that call on Race Day.
When your session is called, you must be ready. We will give you enough time to get your car in the chute. The order will be Mod's, then Sportsman, then Ponies, then Pures.
You moment you pull on the track in your session, you scratch your qualifying time, no exception, even if you break something.
You run a warm up lap, then you are green.
You can run both laps, or wave off your second, pull in and go straight to the chute, you may not go back to your pit, your crew must be in the chute ready to make any adjustment you feel necessary to quicken your car. There is no exception to this rule, (again, to keep me out of trouble. I've enough other things to do that night, so I really don't want to have to make special decisions, screw it up and anger any fellow racers) You can then go out after the rest of your divison has run their chosen lap or laps, to run your second lap. Same drill, warmup lap and you are green.
When you are green, you are green, spin or not.
Your fastest time of your purchased laps will be your official qualifying time for the night. So, you can bump another car out of their spot, or even the field, or give yourself your own bumping out of your spot or even the field.
You must purchase the lap or laps prior to the "Add A Lap" Sessions, and I must have your money in hand before you lineup in the chute.
You cannot go back to your pit between laps, all adjustments must be made by your crew in the chute, so have them there, tools in hand.
We will have the qualifying times listed at the pit shack prior to those add lap sessions so you can see where you stack up against your competition, and see what it will take to move yourself up in the qualifying times.
Pay attention to the pit area announcer, as when he calls you up, you gotta go, no exception.
Simple enough, eh?
Simple enough.
have a good day,

This also is important.
It may seem as if I spend most of my effort on the mod class.
Well, I race a mod, and as a result, I will always work hard for my fellow mod racers and my class. I will also work for your class at this event though, too. I want every class there to have fun, be recognized for the racers that they are, and get their chance to shine.
So, as a result, I need this help.
I need someone from the Sportsman Class, the Pony Class and the Pure Class to shake some trees, call some people, and help me get a Fast Qualifier Pot started for these classes, which will be modeled after what I have done in the past with the mods. Pay down as far as we can and yet keep it worth being in at least the Top Three qualifiers. I will also take any payment for any qualifying position that anyone wants their money applied to. Same goes for Hard Charger awards for those classes, or any other special contingency award for the Sportsman, Ponies and Pures.
I need someone from each of those classes to help me champion your class too. Give me a call, or see me in the pits.

More info:
My daughter, Rhiannon, has developed an idea, I've spoken with Jim and it appears as if this will be a go, dependent upon drivers input to me on this site and MSTRC.
First off, There will be only four classes at Racin' and Rockin' IV, mods, sportsman, ponies and pures.
Rhiannon is putting up $100.00 for a purse enhancement for one class, to be spread about as I determine it should be.
The class that will get this 100 spread into the purse will have to earn it.
How, you might ask?
You will need to as a class, win a Tug Of War, held between the qualifying sessions and the start of racing that night.
Rules:
Drivers only, no crew members, no ringers, just the drivers.
Teams will be equal in number, example, ten mod drivers against 10 sportsmen, etc., 6 against 6, whatever the lowest number is, the other team will have to set other drivers to the side.
The mods will pull against the sportsman first, pures against the ponies.
Winner of each pull goes for the purse enhancement money in the final pull.
Simple rules, simple game, great entertainment for the crowd, and incentive for the drivers.
Now, if anyone is certain that their class will be the ultimate winner of the money, start letting me know how much you are willing to put into the pot. Have friends or sponsors that are sure your class is the best? Put some money towards the pot, pull your backside off and your class may get the added purse money.
This could end up being a good size purse enhancement, all started with $100.00 from my daughter Rhiannon.
There may well be a traveling trophy to go with this purse money also.
Let's get this one underway.
And, c'mon ponies, pures and sportsmen, let's get with it on getting some things going for your class, start early and get some money working for your benefit. I'm waiting for someone to step up for their "Add a Lap" money, or a Hard Charger Award, Purse enhancement money, etc.
Racin' and Rockin' can be a great show this year, we all just need to start thinking and plotting and planning.
That's the news for now,

Apr 29 2008, 06:21 AM
Gavin,
The infield, right in front of the grandstands, we will need to hurry the drivers to the area after the drivers meeting, or right before, whenever works and whenever we have the most fans, or potentially, thinking about this as I am writing, between the heats and the features, however, I know most will want to be looking at their rides for the night. But, this could be a great way to involve many different people in this day of racing, and provide a class with some extra purse money. In order to get the biggest bang for the buck, we need Big Ed to work the crowd beforehand, which is the logic behind the "between heats and features" thinking.
Surely there are those who think their class is better in all ways than the others, and the Tug of War will definitely be a way of proving it, right?

Matt,
Here's a new one. Perry (Lack o Diesel) Davenport and the team Dodge Modified team will put $50 toward the driver who impoves the most from his first round of qualifying to his second. This is for Posistion not time. So if you qualify 10th the first time and come back out and qualify 3rd then you could get the prize. I'd like to hope the times are close enough that there won't be some huge differential i times. It will give that driver back his $20 plus $30.
Revision: working on a method to keep from sandbagging into to an easy $50. What would you say to only allowing an impovement of say no more than half a second. That's a lot and that would be iffy. I'd almost rather see a 1/4 second. What do you all think? I want this award to go to the guy who go's for it, misses it and tries again and impoves.

Well,
What better to do on a Saturday night when Springport gets rained out?
Go to Darb's in Eaton Rapids with Mary, The Gov, Dick LaPratt, John Mamula, Wayne Haughton and Brian and Kim, (who was celebrating her birthday) and watch the Richmond race and talk about R&R IV.
So, picking up on an idea Mary had talked to me about a few days ago, we discussed the subject of R&R IV t-shirts.
Then, we discussed the cost of them, and what to sell them for, and what to use any money made for.
Which was to help pay for the event, basically.
Then came the next idea.
Why not use a portion of any money earned to enhance the payout for all of the classes.
Which to me sounds like a good idea.
And which I also passed by Big Ed for his input, and Jim Leasure.
In essence, the long and short of it is that we may well proceed with the idea.
But, what to put on them?
So, Dick LaPratt calls me on Sunday, and tells me, in essence, since he doesn't have a sponsor for his rear quarter panel of his mod, nor do I, why not use the empty space for something positive. A little pressure on John Mamula, and maybe it would work.
So, here is the plan.
Take a good look at Dick's mod, (#88) and schinde's mod (#6) at Spartan on Friday's, and take a close look at the rear corners of both cars.
On them, you will find four different slogans we are considering for the t-shirts. Watch both cars each week to see what slogan changes there are.
Get on this site and let us know which of them you like the best, and we will sit back, take that input and make a final decision.
Get 'em ready prior to the event, try to sell them at Spartan and Springport both before and during the event, let Mary do a little arithmetic, and bingo, we can help to pay for the event itself, and help enhance the driver's purses in yet another way.
However, don't forget about the tug of war between the classes, already with a $100.00 bounty waiting for the class that wins the tug of war.
The t-shirts will get spread amongst all classes, the Tug Of War Challenge will go to the class that wins it.
Even though this race is not intended to be "for the money", one has to admit, it helps, and I hope to make it better for all drivers who make it that night.
Again, let's make this the event of the summer, and a race a driver will be proud to say he has won.
Braggin' rights are worth something too!

Matt,
This is your tire rule for Spartan/Springport:
g) D.O.T. street radial tires only. No bias ply or made for racing. Maximum width 235. No less than 70 series (no 65, 60, 50, etc.). Minimum tread wear rating of 300. This is on an 8" racing wheel.
This rule will prevent any of us from AC/Dixie from coming over as our rules are minimum 60 series. We also run that tire on a 7" wheel and cannot have racing wheels. We would have to buy all new tires or at least two new left sides to race there. (I know that we were able to run our 60 series tires at the Spartan invitationals last year, but i dont know if this rule is new or not.) This issue is kinda big for us. Most of us run 70 series on the right, but 60 or 65 on the lefts. Our cars are 150 lbs heavier, we run 2" exhaust for 12" before and after the muffler, your is all 2.5", and our wheel base is 112" yours is 108" but we can run a 60 series tire.

May 7 2008, 11:44 AM
I would also visit Springport/Spartan on other nights if you guys come up with something to make our 60 series a legal tire. It shouldnt be an issue since we run a 7" wheel, but I just want to be sure. I can see the rule being nothing below a 60 series as this prevents drivers from buying a 200 dollar tire, but you cant find a super expensive high performance tire in a sixty series, just in the 50 series range, and below. We almost all run Goodyear Regattas from 60-70 series to get staggar.

Can you all come up with a plan that will allow us to run there. If you can, and we are gonna be legal, I would like to add 60 dollars to the pure stock purse.
Am I reading this right????
