DeWitt, Michigan (Tuesday, May 13, 2008): 16-year-old Chad Finley likes to keep himself busy on his off ASA Late Model Series weekends. With a month off between ASALMS Northern Division races, Finley has been steering his family owned Outlaw-Bodied Super Late Model!
Last Friday night, May 9, 2008 Finley joined an impressive list of drivers at a track that is hard too win a heat race at, let alone a Feature as the DeWitt Michigan teenager accomplished the biggest feat of his young career!
Finley won his first career Feature in Outlaw-Bodied Super Late Models competition at his home track of Spartan Speedway, located South of Lansing in Mason, Michigan and in the process, joined an elite list of drivers to accomplish that feat at “The Track the Stars Call Home.”
Two of those drivers who are amongst the most successful drivers in the tracks 52-year history are none other than his Father and Car Owner, multi-time track champion, Jeff Finley along-with his Uncle, another multi-time track champion, Doug Finley!
After missing opening night at the fast little 1/4 mile just outside of Michigan’s capital city of Lansing due to racing in the 2008 ASALMS Northern Division Season Opener at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis and then losing the previous Friday due to Mother Nature, Finley was ready
In winning his first career Feature, Finley certainly earned it with his “Uncle Dougie” who was glued to his back bumper over the last segment of the 40-lap Feature and tried every trick in his arsenal to get by his nephew, but young Chad was determined and would fend off his Uncle too win his first ever Late Model Feature in any type of full-sized stock car!
"I can’t thank God enough for this opportunity. It has been a long time coming and we earned it on Friday night! If you keep knocking on the door, eventually it’s going to open and that’s what happened!” An emotional Finley stated even after a few days had passed since his first ever Feature victory!
“Going into the night i was hungry for the first win all day! I kept focusing on getting the car where I could drive it for the 40-lap feature.” Explained the young Finley who was still beaming about his first career Feature Win.
“We started fourth and got to the lead by Lap 6 and continued to lead when a caution came out on Lap 19. “Once the green flag came out, I pulled away and set my sights on victory lane.” He continued. “I looked up at the scoreboard with five laps to go, it all sank in that I was finally going to do it.”
Since mirrors aren’t allowed in weekly competition at Spartan, Finley could only rely on himself and the scoreboard to see how many laps were left and who was behind his Northside Towing Autoparts2020.com, Auto Value Certified Service Centers, Velocity Graphix, Howe Racing Enterprises machine.
When he looked up with Five laps to go, he saw the #29 and that meant that his Uncle Doug Finley was coming in a hurry! “Man I drove the wheels off the thing the whole night and then I saw the #29 up there and thought, Oh Man!” The 16-year-old added.
“On the last lap ‘Uncle Dougie’ rolled up to the outside and tried to drive by me off of Turn 4, but I shut the door on him too win the race!” He happily remarked! “I’ve watched Dad and Uncle Doug race here since I was knee high to a grasshopper and to come here first night out this season and beat my uncle that way makes the win so much sweeter.”
“The feeling of finally conquering to victory lane was irreplaceable and to stand on the door and hold the checkered flag made me really grateful to be where I’m today and have the support of my family behind me.” Finley revealed.
“This means more to me than the world and this one is for my Uncle Bobby who passed away in 2005 and my sister Teia still is my biggest fan, she’s in the National Guard now and this one was for both of them and also for everyone who helped make this possible!”
Finley and crew will spend the next two Friday nights (May 16th and May 23rd) back at Spartan Speedway before heading over to Grundy County Speedway, located West of Chicago in Morris, Illinois for the second ASALMS Northern Division event of the season; The 10th annual George Appleton Memorial 125 on Sunday, May 25, 2008.
“Hopefully this gets us on a roll and carries over to the ASALMS car when we start back up again with three straight events over a two-week span! He ended.
After Grundy County, the Team Finley Racing crew will head to Toledo Speedway on Sunday, June 1, 2008 for the rescheduled Glass Breaker 125 and then the following Saturday, June 7, 2008 the team will make the long journey to LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway, located just East of the Minnesota / Wisconsin state line in West Salem, Wisconsin for the River Run 100.
For the 2008 season, the 16-year-old Great Lakes State driver will sport the Auto Value / Bumper to Bumper Parts Stores and Certified Service Centers colors as well as the AutoPart2020.com decals on the side of both his ASALMS ride and his Outlaw Super Late Model machine.
