It was a racing fans delight as some of the best drivers around competed at the Angola Motor Speedway on AM1140 WAWK “The Hawk” Night at the Races! The evening started off with the Auto Value Michigan Legend Series taking to the high banked asphalt oval for their 30 lap feature event. These cars were fantastic as their event was started and finished in just over 8 minutes without a single caution! Jerry Warden took the early lead but current series point leader Chance Rice worked his way to the second spot by lap 7. Rice slid by Warden on lap 14 with Levi Rouster in tow. Rouster lost ground on the leader of Rice as Warden tried take back the second spot. When the checkers flew Rice grabbed his 3rd win in 2008 with Rouster, Warden, Brandon Mahoney and Matt Todd finishing in the top five. Tyler Rycenga and Rice won their heat races.
Clif Bennett was in top shape as he put his Smith Enterprises Mini Stock into the lead at the start of their 15 lap feature event but fast qualifier Jerry Slone was charging hard. Slone looking for his 4th feature win of the 2008 season moved around Bennett on lap 6 and cruised to the win. Bennett held on for second with Logan Parker third. Matt Morton and Charlie Beattie finished fourth and fifth. Bennett and David Hull Jr. claimed heat victories.
The Jonny on the Spot Street Stocks 20 lap feature seen the top 3 or 4 cars nose to tail almost the entire race. Tony Barcus, Doug Crager, Tommy Little and Justin Oberlin all battled for the top positions as the laps wound down. The race went down to the stripe as Barcus beat Crager to the line by .7 seconds and Little just .2 seconds behind Crager for third. Oberlin finished fourth with Brent Dirrim fifth. Fast qualifier Robby Henderson broke a shock in the event and was sidelined. Little and Barcus grabbed heat wins for the night.
In the Budweiser Super Late Models 30 lap feature the cars were once again gunning for what looked to be a million dollars. Nobody was willing to give up the race until the checkered flag waved. Larry Henderson and Jasper Case battled for the first 5 laps and then got together in turn 2 to bring out the caution. Justin May would assume the lead at the restart and had his car running awesome as he tried to hold off Jeff Parr with Greg Parr right behind. Jeff Parr was able to slide to the inside of May and muscle his way to the lead. Greg Parr followed the line and took over second. Greg wanted the top spot and looked to do it in turn 3 but would get Jeff and himself sideways with Jeff able to get it straight and continue the lead. Greg ended up going high and sliding his way through turn 4 slowing May and allowing fast qualifier Brent Jack to advance. In the end it was Jeff Parr taking home the money with Jack second Joe Ellert, Brian Huntley and May rounding out the top five. Heat wins went to Henderson and May.
The final event of the night was one of the best and if you missed this one you missed the talk of the town! The Superior Auto Modifieds were in action for their 25 lap feature event and most in preparation for the June 7 FAYGO 100 with the O’Reilly USA Modifieds Series. Their was racing in every corner but the action was focused at the front as Rick Coe and Jeff Ganus battled side by side the entire race with only .001 second separating the two for the majority of the laps. Fast qualifier Brian Nester worked his way up but had a fierce battle with Mike Zordan and Aaron Timmerman most of the race. On the final lap nobody knew if it who it was going to be as Ganus when high coming out of four and Coe maneuvered his machine low, but at the stripe it was Jeff Ganus in his first trip to Angola Motor Speedway holding off Coe by only .174 seconds. Nester was able to clench third with Timmerman and Zordan fourth and fifth. Zordan and Mike Murphy collected heat wins.
Next Saturday night don’t miss the highly talked about FAYGO 100 for the O’Reilly USA Modified Series along with the Budweiser Super Late Models, Jonny on the Spot Street Stocks, and Smith Enterprises Mini Stocks. Practice at 4:00, Time Trials at 6:00, and racing at 7:30. Don’t forget about the famous AMS Dollar Menu including $1 FAYGO sodas! For more information log on to www.angolamotorspeedway.com.
