Can somebody tell me how to hook up a cooling system surge tank theres 2 fittings on the tank i think the bigger fitting goes into the inlet side of the water pump but im not sure about the other fitting and should you use braided line for this or is rubber hose ok .
Thanks...Joe

Joe,

The large fitting on the bottom will attach to the pump on top,or on the side of the pump just above the large inlet hose from the lower radiator. Both of these are suction ports. The small line needs to go into the highest point of the radiator tank on the same side that the lower hose hooks too.

You can not use the overflow fitting, so you may need to weld a fitting into your tank. This fitting allows air and water to bleed off into the surge tank and then the water only is pulled back into the cooling system off the bottom of the tank.

Good high pressure rubber line is ok, but I would not use just fuel line, unless you use the line for fuel injectors. Some company's make line for what they call push lock barb style fittings, this would be just fine to use.

You will also need to eliminate the pressure cap on your rad and use just the one on the surge tank. if you can't cap off the rad, then use a 28-32 lb cap on the rad and a 22-24 lb cap on the sugre tank.

Just to add something - how Governor said to hook it up is just how I did mine - if you check Stewart water pump's website they also give you directions. One thing though - you can use the overflow on the radiator as the small line hookup IF you eliminate the lower part of the radiator car (just upper seal only). It will not work correctly if you leave the "guts" of the radiator cap in it as this will block flow until the engine cools and creates a vacuum. I made the same thing for my sportsman this year and have not had one bit of problems with cooling - very happy how it all came out.
