Michael Ross Memorial Great, But Rain Plays Havoc Again at AMS
Angola Motor Speedway
June 28, 2008
(Fremont, Indiana)
On Smith Enterprises Night at the Races 21 Smith Enterprises Mini Stocks came to Angola Motor Speedway for the 41 lap Michael Ross Memorial Event. With $500 and a beautiful 6 foot trophy going to the winner the racing was heated from the drop of the green flag.
Lincoln Electric Rookie of the Year contenders Matt Morton and Taylor Oberlin started on the front row but veteran Todd Gearhart got by both drivers to take the lead. Milford Indiana’s Jason Weaver in his first visit to AMS stormed through the field and took the lead on lap 13. Jerime Damron and Logan Parker started deep in the field but moved in behind Weaver by the halfway mark. Damron got to Weaver’s back bumper nearly pushing him around the track lap after lap but couldn’t get alongside. Weaver had just enough to stay in front of Damron and won the 41 lap Michael Ross Memorial Logan Parker held on for third, Jerry Sloan was 4th, and Todd Gearhart came home 5th. Gearhart and Morton were heat winners.
The Superior Auto Modifieds were next up for their 25 lap feature and it was Tom Wiedman starting on the pole. Wiedman pulled out to the early lead but got very loose on lap 6 allowing Chris Shannon to take the lead. A big crash on lap 8 ended the night for of fast qualifier Erik Shaeffer and former champion Rick Coe. When the green came back out Shannon held on to the top spot until lap 17 when Vicksburg, Michigan’s AJ Foote got underneath him and grabbed the lead. Foote held off Tony Dager in the closing laps and rolled into Tri State Line-X victory for his first ever feature win at AMS. Dager, Shannon, Todd Foote, and Scott Moyer all picked up top five finishes. AJ and Todd Foote won the heats.
As soon as the Budweiser Super Late Models pulled onto the track mother nature took over and the rain washed out the final two races of the night. Double features will be run at a later date. Don’t miss the action this weekend at the Angola Motor Speedway with two full nights of racing. Thursday July 3 will see the CRA Super Series run the Hargus Mullins Memorial 125, the Howe CRA Sportsman, Superior Auto Modifieds and the Jonny on the Spot Street Stocks. On Saturday July 5th MY PC TECK.com presents Open Wheel Spectacular #1. The MSA Supermodifieds will make their first ever appearance at AMS. Also scheduled are The Wolverine Outlaw Midgets, Superior Auto Modifieds and Smith Enterprises Mini Stocks. Practice at 4:15 Thursday 3:30 Saturday, Time Trials at 6:00, and racing at 7:30 both nights. Don’t forget about the famous AMS Dollar Menu including $1 FAYGO sodas!
