Hey guys, I was bored again and as you all may know I am trying to sell my race car. I wanted to do a modified or Late Model but I think that would put me in the bleachers permanantly if I were to race it full time. So on to my question at my dad's house back in Michigan I have a 91 Camaro with a motor I built for the V8 car during my first attempt at racing. It's got the race cam the Kickout oil pan and all that. It's got a fresh Snelenberger trans with a TCI convertor and a posi rear end too.

I race on Dirt and the rear suspension stock on this car looks like it could hook but the front end leaves me with some concerns. First Who makes racing shocks and struts for this car? I can't find anything in the Speedway Catalog. I really don't want to switch to an old style subframe. There is the option of pulling the drivetrain and scrapping the rest of the car but then I have to get new headers and exhaust to fit whatever chassis I get. which sucks cause that stuff is new. The interior of this car is shot and the body needs about 3000 bucks worth of work just to be presentable again. not to mention the motor has too much cam for the street. I want to use it for something and I think that would be a good end of this cars rough life for it. if you want I could copy and paste the rules here. looking for advice.

I think those cars have a shorter wheelbase than most of the street stock rules allow for around here, I could be wrong though.
tricknology
what are your Rules (link)?

these the 3 rd gen camaro 1983 to1992 had a real trick rear suspension, torque arm with a panhard bar, but had a McPhearson strut front suspension like the 4 cyl. Mustangs.

the 4th Gen 1993 and newer had a SLA front suspension ( Upper and lower a-arms).

both cars have very short wheel bases of 101 inches, where as the 2and gen(~ 1971 to 1982) Camaro's had 108 WB, Leaf spring rear suspensions, and in the frront had Upper and lower a-arms .

For most tracks 101 inch wheel base is too short for all classes except tyhe RWD 4 cyl cars.

see specs

the NEW Mustang has a much longer wheel base and may be leagal at many tracks

IMHO<<< Myabe tracks that have 4 cyl mustangs should allow the short wheelbase Mustangs and Camaros with a 302 CI v8 or a 305 v8 to compete in the street stock classes.

building a strong 2.3 4cyl cost more money than building a 302 v8!!!
Rocky
Well I'll be damned I figured the wheel base was longer, 104 inches is the minimum. I'll call the tracks there are guys running gen 3 skin on older frames which ought to be illegal. maybe they'll start allowing these cars. they been around a long time and are cheap now. the car has a race ready drive train, that's why I was gonna do it in the first place. let me look in the rules again. I am pretty sure there is a loophole for these cars that I have seen before.

They really should take a look at the wheelbase rule I think. I have seen about four of them 2 at auto city, and 2 at owendale. One of the owendale ones was in sportsman and had moved the rear end back to meet the wheelbase specs looked dumb like that but thats the rule icon_rolleyes.gif The other didn't have the rear changed can't imagine the 1982 was any longer then the 83 (I'm pretty sure they changed them in 1982) but maybe it was an 82 and was legal or they didn't check it or nobody had an issue with it. That was several years back now.

Why would should that be illegal? The outer skin is for decoration only. What differance does it make what kind of car it is. I ask because I ran that body on my Chevelle for 3 seasons at AC, I love the look I got when people thought it was a third gen. I had to stretch the body to fit the frame. My friend ran that body on his 76 Monte chassis, mostly at Dixie and a little at AC. I stole the idea from him. He stretched his from 104 to 116 and it still looked good. i am not very computer adept or I would stick pics on here. I was just wondering why you thought this is wrong.
Rocky
Not that it was bad just why not be able to run a stock chassis Camaro or Fox Mustang when you can run a shortened, fabricated chassis? These cars are old, cheap rear wheel drive and readily available. Chevelles and older Camaros and firebirds are getting rarer every day. I have however decided on another car. Dad's old limited will pass as a street stock at this track and a sportsman at the other one. It isn't the best car but it just needs a motor freshen, and hydraulc work and some paint. plus scrap is high. I'll take all the good stuff out of the Z and scrap the body which gives me a spare engine and some other pieces I can sell off. a shame how much work I did on this car just to finally grow up enough to realize the race car for the street idea was stupid.
