I am working on a 2001 Chevy truck 2500 HD. I need to replace some rear lug studs and nuts. I have the axles out and the nut for the roller bearing out. My question, is that hub assembly pressed onto the axle housing or is there a clip or something that I am missing. It doesn't look like there should be anything holding the hub on at this point, other than corrosion. Should I get a puller and pull the hub off?

Any help would be great.

The newest setup has some resistance in the seal. It's a 2 piece seal that fits tight on the housing snout. So with that in mind, make sure you get it real tight when you re-assemble it. Then back it off and set the preload.

Sounds like you got everything loose... As they say around here- "just hit it with your purse" LOL.

I kind of figured that was the case, but it was late last night and I didn't want to do any futrther damage....LOL Do you think the seal on the back of the hub should be replaced or can I re-use this if I am careful?

I marked the preload nut where the dowl pin goes and the number of turns it took to get it off so I think I should be ok there. It's just a roller bearing back there so there wasn't much pre load present when I took it apart.

you can re-use it if it doesn't get damaged. I'm not sure if it's better to leave the part on the snout that will stay on there, or if you should carefully pry it off the snout and put it back into the rest of the seal.

You might want a little more pre-load than before to compensate for some wear, but you don't need much. I usually tighten them down good and tight and spin the huib a few times to seat everything. Then loosen it up and go just a little more than finger tight.

That sounds about right to me as far as pre load. That is all that was there when I took it off. It's just a straight roller bearing so I know there isn't much pre load needed. I'll yank them off and check the seals out then.
