Before I wander off into my own little world, I wanted to make a comment about the sale of Owosso Speedway to my friends Jeff Parish and Rick Miracle and their wives. This is probably the best news coming out of that track in years. The road will be tough but they are the people for the job and it is evident that the racers and fans are behind them. I wish them nothing but the best!
I now return to my normally scheduled blatherings. I was writing a note to Bill Martin out of the Iowa IMCA office about Milt Montgomery, the latest IMCA Modified winner at Crystal Motor Speedway last week when I began to recall how lucky I've been these many years. I was telling Bill of how Milt had used good sense and took advantage of every possible move and break to move to the front and take his feature win at Crystal when I remembered how many times I've seen that happen over the years at CMS.
I've been a fan of Roger Wing for… geez… decades? Roger also helped my then brand new race team become much better back in the early 80's and I always remembered that fact. He didn't have to do that. He was… well… Roger Wing! We were a bunch of racing newbies and maybe it showed a tad too much. Another driver is Jeff Kohn. I have known Jeff for a long time, raced against him, and watched him race. When everyone was claiming 'one lane race track,' Jeff was on the high side passing like a wild man. David Hilliker is an amazing man to watch as well. I watched him visit CMS with the big boarded Outlaw Late Models and I may have missed it but it appeared he never let off the gas.
In the "lower divisions," I am a huge Jeff Reist fan. I had the pleasure of standing in the middle and watching Jeff move flawlessly through the pack to challenge for or take the win time after time, truly earning his nickname of "Mr. Smooth." I love watching Chaney Newland drive. It sometimes seems fate is just waiting to drop on him at the last minute but the guy always has that smile. It is hard to openly say I am pulling for some one but if anyone deserves to win a championship, it has to be Chaney. Vern Buskirk comes to mind as well. Vern is always in the chase and is always a fair driver. Who could ask for more?
Of course we ALL had the privilege of watching two giants in the sport race for years... Myron DeYoung and my personal "hero", Rick Stout. Rick and I went to school together (yeah... Rick is old too!) and a nicer guy you will never meet. Rick and Myron set a high bar of excellence at Crystal Motor Speedway that others are still trying to reach. My best memories of racing will always be the multitude of races that I watched those two giants race side by side for lap after lap, a mere inch apart and never touching. If I never see another race, I'm glad I saw those two men race together. Racing has never been better.
It's been pretty warm here in St Pete and my grandson is down here for a few weeks. We've been gator hunting and to the ocean and spend most of the day at the pool. If things work out, we'll be at Disney World on the Fourth of July… but fear not, one of these days, I will once again see you… at the track!
