Press Release by Brandon DePew
Action Packed Doubleheader Weekend at AMS
Angola Motor Speedway
July 5, 2008
(Fremont, Indiana)

The fans packed the stands for two awesome shows over the Independence Day weekend at the Angola Motor Speedway. Thursday night July 3rd saw the CRA Super Series make their annual visit to the high banks of AMS for the Hargus Mullins Memorial 125 presented by Centennial Wireless and EMF Corporation. Boris Jurkovic from Joliet, Illinois was the fast qualifier of the evening with a quick lap of 13.836 seconds. When the green flag dropped Jason Shively jumped out to a comfortable lead early but there was a lot of racing left. CRA points leader and local favorite Scott ‘The Hurricane” Hantz had his car working on the high side as he marched up to the second spot. Hantz was ready to strike on lap 46 when Shively slipped up high and Hantz got the lead. Rick Turner followed Hantz past Shively and was all over the leader’s back bumper when he spun coming out of turn 2 on lap 101. Hantz held off Boris Jurkovic for the final 24 laps and took home another CRA Super Series victory at Angola, Jason Dietsch, Shively and Jeff Lane were all top 5 finishers.

Steve Minich Jr was very impressive in the “Windy City Bags 40” for the Superior auto modifieds. After starting on the outside of the front row Minich Jr led wire to wire holding off a charging Bud Perry for the final 17 laps. Minich Jr rolled into Tri State Line-X victory lane for his second feature win of the season and took home the $1000 winner’s purse. Perry, Tony Dager, Brad Springer, and Jason Timmerman rounded out the top five. Dager, Steve Christman, and John White won the modified heats.

The Howe CRA Sportsman were on the track next with their 75 lap feature presented by Ashley Transport. A fantastic field of 30 cars took the green flag with Chad Richardson on the pole. Richardson jumped out front early and never looked back as the racing got intense behind him. The tight racing produced several accidents that took some great cars out of contention as Steve Minich Jr, Billy Hutson, and Tony Dager all had problems. Richardson was the big winner with John Marshall coming home 2nd, Nick Lay 3rd, Eric Barcus 4th, and Al Cook Jr 5th. Rick Sullivan, Jim Spillers, and Richardson were heat winners.

The Jonny on the Spot Street Stocks feature began with a scary crash as Robby Henderson slid through the infield and slammed into the side of Brandon Pulver in turn 2. Both drivers climbed from their cars unharmed but the cars were not as lucky as both were severely damaged. Ken Barkey dominated the 20 lap event but was passed with just two laps to go by Mike Overholser, who held on for the win over Tommy Little, Carl Muffley, Brent Dirrim, and Dave Click. Pulver and Barkey won the heats.

Saturday night July 5 was Open Wheel Spectacular Show #1 presented by MYPCTECK.com as the Big Block MSA Supermodifieds visiting AMS for the first time in more than 20 years. Charlie Shultz set fast time at a blistering 12.704 seconds for the Supermodifieds. The 30 lap feature event saw Lagrange, Ohio’s Jon Henes pace the field for the first 13 laps, but he could not hold off a charging Tim Jedrzejek as he slid under Henes and took the top spot. Charlie Shultz had just moved up to 3rd when Moe Lilje made contact ending Shultz’s chances at victory. Jedrzejek grabbed another feature win, with Dave Shullick Jr., Henes, Lilje and Randy Burch rounding out the top 5. Tim Ice and Trent Stephens won the heat races.

“The Flyin Farmer” Dave Nester had his Superior Auto Modified hooked up for the 50 lap event as he started on pole and jumped out front. With D. Nester out front Brian Nester, Steve Minich Jr, and Bud Perry stormed through the pack to make a 4 car battle for the lead. Minich Jr took over the top spot on lap 20 as B. Nester and Perry took over second and third. Perry grabbed the second spot with ten laps left but could only watch Minich Jr make it a weekend sweep in the Superior Auto Modifieds. Perry, B. Nester, Jason Timmerman, and Brad Yelton were the top 5 finishers. Michelle Sexton, Kale Asztalos, and Harry Foote Jr took home heat wins.

Shullsburg, Wisconsin’s David Byrne and Shelbyville IN’s Adam Kramer were the class of the field for the Wolverine Outlaw Midget Series feature. The two ran nose to tail nearly the entire race but Kramer could not get a bite off the corner to make the pass. Byrne took home the trophy and the cash as he pulled into Tri State Line-X victory lane, Kramer came home 2nd, Phil Rutledge 3rd, Doug Dietsch 4th, Chris O’Connell 5th. Kramer and Byrne were also the heat winners.

The final race of the night was definitely worth the wait as Rookie Logan Parker got his first career victory in the Smith Enterprises Mini Stock feature. Parker climbed the fence in jubilation after the victory, thrilling the great fans at the AMS. Cliff Bennett, Todd Gearhart, Darwin Wolfe, and Howard Fisette Jr. all claimed top 5 finishes. Taylor Oberlin and Wolfe won the Mini Stock Heats.

Don’t miss a Jonny on the Spot Street Stock “AllStar” weekend this Saturday night at AMS. $500 to win for the Street Stocks, along with the Budweiser Super Late Models along with the Super Late Model Makeup Feature from June 28, Superior Auto Modifieds, and Smith Enterprises Mini Stocks.
