Owosso Speedway Announces July 26th Schedule Change
By: Chris Fobbe

OVID, MI (7/20)- Owosso Speedway officials have announced changes to the rest of the 2008 racing schedule, beginning with this Saturday, July 26, 2008. The Fast Track Promotion Modified division will be given the night off in order to accommodate other local shows running on the same night for that division. This is also due to the fact that the Fast Track promotion Modifieds were given this night off under the former Administration of the Speedway on their original 2008 schedule.
Also due to the fact that the former schedule did not originally have the Affordable Tire & Service Center Late Models on schedule, that division will not be racing for points on this evening. A full program for the Affordable Tire & Service Center Late Models will race, but no points will be awarded on this night. The Advance Integrated Services Street Stocks, Affordable Tire & Service Center Pure Stocks, Owosso Speedway Mini-Stocks will all race a normal program for points. Also on the card will be Lawn Mower Racing presented by Tyler Lawn and Sport of Owosso.
From this week on, Affordable Tire & Service Center Late Models and Fast Track Promotion Modifieds will be alternating weeks, with the Late Models racing this Saturday, and the Modifieds racing Saturday August 2. Fast Track Promotions send their apologies for any complications this schedule change will cause for fans and racers alike.

I would also like to add to this press release that Chris did- this schedule is directly the opposite of the schedule that we worked out at Whittemore in years past successes.

We had announced this type of plan during our first drivers meetings and were going to announce when it began this week- However the weather cut us short of our drivers meeting.

This will give the traveling guys a chance to migrate between the 2 facilities during their off weeks, and will allow Owosso to keep a first rate payout for our drivers while we work on filling the place back up!

We were extremely pleased with the turnout we had Saturday for cars.

This would have been one heck of a show on the historic 3/8 mile. Lots of very good drivers were at the big O on Saturday and we were looking forward to that event!

Thank you very much to those that took a chance on the weather to come to Owosso!

Please save your wrist bands from Saturday- they are good for any night the remainder of the season when you choose to redeem them.

rolleyes.gif tongue.gif Looked like it was going to be a great night until the rains came. we towed up from Mt Clemens to race the Big O, looks like it might be our home track from now on. it was nice to talk with the owners, made us feel right at home

Ever since the new owners took over it has been that way. Even before they took over for that matter. Seems like some places we go, they try to run you out. My friend Dan Shumbarger went with his pure stock all the way from Sault Ste. Marie Mich. He finished second in the feature and everyone at the scales.... 1st, 3rd,4th, and so on and so on, came to congratulate him, and say they hoped to see him again.
I've always loved the atmosphere at the Big O.
carp44racing
why are the late models and mods now alternating. not a good show or move!

Damn I was excited on getting back out to the Big O for the first time in a long time.......cant see making the trip now. guess i'll wait and see whats on for next year.

Ted

You should give it a chance, to me... the Mods are the Lates of the future.....(The big draw). Why wouldn't you come race without the Lates, or the Mods? (Not sure wich one you drive). Just askin'.
They are trying to get the track back on it's feet. Paying two fairly large payouts per nite is probably pretty tough. They are playing the cards they've been delt. Thanks,Dan55. Hope to see you there.

WOW!

I wish the Big O the best but Late Models (Limited Late Models) and Modifieds can't race the same night because the payouts are too high together? Modifieds are the Late Models of the future? Are you kidding me? Modifieds as the premiere division? I respect all mod racers, I know they're a handful, but if they will soon be considered a premier division I don't know how tracks will survive. Remember when 35 SLM's showed up to race at the Big O? Am I really getting that old?

I always thought of Late Models and Modifieds as co-premier divisions. They run the same number of laps and both put on a great show.
lilmikhun
Mods are the future premier division. Supers have gone the way of a traveling special the last couple of years, its too bad but thats how it is. Mods seem like the best choice today; supers cost way too much, late models-limiteds-pro lates whatever you want to call them are starting become the same way. Watching the crowds reactions during a regular night at the Big O, I believe that the mods are the division 75% of the fans are most excited to watch on a weekly basis.

As for the scheduling changes, I am sure Rick, Jeff, Pam, and Jenny thought very hard on what the best action for the track was at this point in time. I back their decisions 100%, even though I love watching the mods every Saturday night.

We do not expect everyone to be pleased with this announcement- however it is the move that makes the most sense when all options are weighed for the state of the way things are in racing and surrounding communities that go to Owosso.

This is the template that we used to save Whittemore from going under a couple years ago and it will work at Owosso.

Every single person that I talked to that owned a car and was racing saw it as a helpful move for them as well.

They have half of the cost associated with getting to the track, fuel, tires and pit passes.

Some of them were very thankful, because in their personal lives things are very tight right now. Some drivers families are feeling the pinch of

the way things are in the world today.

When the track has a solid consumer base established then we will begin adding various series to our schedule. This would include the supers, and sprints and traveling series.

The last show that Owosso had with supers prior to our purchase of the track had just over 300 fans in the stands.

That would pay for the top 3 places in just the super event and not much past that. That is a recipe for disaster for any speedway.

We aim to change gate attendence here and have already, but we cannot take the risk with the tracks finances to check and see if it will work in our first couple months of operation.

This is not something that was taken in lightly, it was something we spoke with our drivers at the drivers meetings and with the series sponsors.

This method is not trial- it is proven to work to get a track on solid footing
, When tracks are on solid footing then the options for business and race programs open up exponentially.

We would love to have supers, mods, limiteds, factorys, pures and minis running all the time. In the world we live in today that is not economically responsible to our racers- or to Owosso Speedway.

We expect to have full fields of cars at Owosso and are doing what we understand works to get them here. The classes that are listed as running with full fields will be one heck of a show.

By doing things this way- we can offer payouts that rival any current weekly payout and ease the burden of getting here for our guys.

These are the reasons for the decision and it was the plan from the onset of the purchase.

Thank you for your past patronage of Owosso and we hope you will sample what we are up to for the future.

Owosso does provide excellent racing for its fans and that will only grow with us. Thank you. Jeff Parish (989)709-6113

Jeff, will there be any more racing past August 16th, I don't see any info for dates after that.

You know.. I wonder if Owosso Speedway working with Springport Motor Speedway could impliment this as a plan for 2009.

If you had six classes of cars.. SLM, Modifieds, Late Model/Sportsman, RWD Pure Stock, FWD V6, and Mini (Pony) Stocks.. runing identical rules.. you could run three classes together every weekend at one track.. three classes together at the other track.. and have a traveling series and a gimick race as support shows to make it a "5 class show" every week. Have individual track championships.. and then offer a combined track championship. This would allow those that want to run every weekend to run every weekend.. and those that only want to run every-other weekend to do that also. You could probably also throw in a four or five Sunday "Super" Shows where hopefully everyone from a class could come and race.. and you could have a Sunday's Champion also.. an idea anyhow.. maybe its not a good one. It would obviously require inter-track cooperation and with SMS's ownership uncertain, maybe it wouldn't work.. maybe it would with AC or Dixie ??

I have to agree with Rick , as a Late Model driver at Owosso it does really help with the cost racing every other weekend I would love to race every week but the cost is getting out of control to keep running every week with sponsor money getting less also . WE Late Model drivers do have families also that we can spend more time with in the summer to.
racnpartsales
Mark, we have a schedule worked out till September 30th and it will be available on the website in a couple more days and we have lots available at the pit window when you come in this weekend. thanks Jeff
racnpartsales
Patrick we are going to talk with all tracks over the off season.

Whittemore is very interested in working together with us and we have an announcement shortly that will be coming out regarding the two tracks.

We are going to be in contact with everyone during the off season. Owosso's mission statement is set around the promotion of short track racing by working with our racers and fans and area race tracks.

The key to all of it is serving others before we serve ourselves.

When groups adopt this philosophy great things are possible, The best business relationships in the world are based on win/win positions for each party involved. Win/Lose builds resentment and builds walls between groups. Life is way to short to live it that way.

We as a group at Owosso have our minds made up to leave a positive impact on the sport and believe there are many who feel the same way that would want to work together.

Every night for the last month there have been voluteers at Owosso because they love the sport of auto racing. They have provided labor and materials and a want for success for all of us. I have seen it at Whittemore as well. This industry is full of great, great people and we want to find a way to get a lot of thier goals accomplished. In a nutshell it is the success and growth of motorsports. We are 100% about that.

Thanks for your input, Jeff

I still can't get canceling the Dwarf Car out of my mind. Owosso has alway be a track that has put us on 2-6 times a year and we all look forward running there. I hope this is not a sign of the future for Owosso and the Dwaf Cars?

Please help me sleep better tonight by telling me you have big plans for the Dwarf Car / Owosso relationship in the future.

Its like I mentioned earlier. We are going to take care of business first and then begin adding things to our schedule. We are at work promoting the speedway every day in the area and our drivers and fans will see gradual improvements every week. No series is out of the question, but we have to crawl, then walk, then run. Things are going well and we plan to be good stewards with what we are provided with. Hope this helps to make sense for you. Thanks Jeff

You guys really seem to take everyones opinion into account before making any decisions. That is a very refreshing stance.

So I am assuming that this means no sprints on August 23rd either??

I do believe Jeff and Rick have suspended all traveling series/specials this year.
