It is with a heavy heart that we announce the tragic loss of John Buckner Sr in a truck/motorcycle crash in Ohio.

John was a key figure at Owosso and supported the racing community in many, many ways through his involvment at the track and in the community with promotion of the sport we love.

John was the very first person to step up to the plate for us here at Owosso with sponsorship and was a big example of a giving heart.

John was a family man and also a business man in Lapeer owning Ross Automotive of Lapeer.

I personally had not seen John without a smile on his face. He was a friendly soul and will be missed by all.

Please keep the family in your prayers.

God Speed John.

I wanted to give an update about Lorretta's condition as was relayed to me via Dave, who crews for John Jr.

Lorretta was on the back of the bike with John Sr when they were hit by the truck. She suffered a broken leg, broken pelvis, broken arm and some facial damage. She was operated on Saturday for these multiple injuries and as I understand it she came through the surgeries in good shape. She is in a hospital in Ohio but I don't know which one.

John Jr was travelling back to Michigan today from what I understand. I haven't talked to Jr yet and I don't know if funeral or memorial service arrangements have been made. Dave is going to call me when he knows more. I haven't seen a news paper in two weeks since I've been at the track, so I don't know if there are already some details that have been made public. I do know this: Lorretta needs our prayers for her physical recovery. Both her and John Jr need our prayers for their emotional recovery.

John Buckner Sr has become a very good friend of mine over the past two years because of racing and Kiwanis. John was president of his club, the Lapeer Sunrise Kiwanis, the same year that I was president of the Linden Kiwanis. We spent a lot of time together working on projects within our clubs. I feel a great hole in my heart right now because of his passing. I can only imagine the gap that is felt by everyone else that has known him for years. John Sr is one of those few people that come into your life and make you feel like you just made a life-long friend. I always felt better about myself after being uplifted by John during any conversation whether by phone or face-to-face. I always looked forward to seeing him. I just can't come to grips with the fact that I won't see him on this earth again. I'm not worried about John's soul because I know where he is spending eternity and I know that he is perfectly happy with his residence right now. I'm concerned for the ones that John has left behind. His family, his life-long friends, those he has mentored and those he has counseled. We just lost an irreplaceable leader and an ally. We need to keep all those that loved and knew John Buckner Sr in our prayers. This is going to take some time to get over. God's will be done.
