Nester Stays Hot With a Win at AMS
Angola Motor Speedway
July 26, 2008
(Fremont, Indiana)

The Superior Auto Modifieds were the first to hit the track on Croxton & Roe Insurance Night at the Races at the Angola Motor Speedway. It was an ALLSTAR weekend for the Modified division with a fast dash and Australian pursuit races. Last weeks feature winner Jason Timmerman took the Dash win, while Al Casselman and Erik Shaeffer won the pursuits.

Josh Nester made only his second appearance of the season Saturday night and had his car on a rail as the green flag dropped for the 40 lap feature. Unfortunately his car was hooked up too well as he was turning laps a half a second under his qualifying time and received the black flag giving the lead to veteran Tom Wiedman. Wiedman held off charges from Erik Shaeffer and Brian Nester until he got loose off turn four with three laps left allowing Nester to slide by. Nester, who has been on a tear at local tracks recently, took the checkers for the first time at the AMS in 2008. Wiedman, with his best run of the season, finished second as Erik Schaeffer, Steve Minich Jr., and Dick Maurer also picked up top 5 finishes.

Logan Parker was looking to make it three straight wins in the Smith Enterprises Mini Stocks, but Clif Bennett was not going to make it easy for the rookie. Bennett made the move for the lead on lap 3 past Kyle Moonen and Parker grabbed second a lap later. Bennett held his line and held off Parker for his second trip to Tri State Line-X Victory Lane in 2008. Kyle Moonen had his best run of the season finishing third, Taylor Oberlin was fourth, and David Hull Jr. fifth. Oberlin and Bennett were the heat winners.

The CRA Street Stocks made their only appearance in 2008 with the “Croxton and Roe 75.” Larry Matillo was late arriving at the track missing nearly all of practice but he jumped out front early in the main event. Matillo stretched his lead as Mike Overholser moved into second and fast qualifier Tommy Little stormed into the top 5. Little’s night was ended on lap 36 when he and John Weisenauer got together on the front stretch sending both cars to the pits. Jason Thompson moved into the second spot and put some pressure on the leader in the closing laps but it wasn’t enough as Larry Matillo picked up his first career CRA Street Stock win. Thompson finished a close second as Jacob Owens, Bret Miles Jr., and Danny Acrey rounded out the top 5. Carl Muffley, Mike Overholser, and Bret Miles Jr. grabbed heat wins.

This Saturday night August 2 don’t miss the final Ladies night of the season presented by Superior Auto and Curves. A Super Show is also scheduled including the Superior Auto Modifieds, Jonny on the Spot Street Stocks, Smith Enterprises Mini Stocks and Double Features for the Budweiser Superlate models. Gates Open at 3:00 Practice at 4:00, Time Trials at 6:00, and racing at 7:30. Don’t forget about the famous AMS Dollar Menu including $1 FAYGO sodas!
