Local favorite and 2007 SUPERPRO champion Tommy Cook took advantage of a late race misfortune to Jack Landis and won the International Gold Cup 100 Presented by Five Star Racing Bodies for SUPERPRO Series late model stock cars Friday night at Baer Field Speedway in Ft. Wayne, Indiana.
Point leader Rick Everidge and Al Cook, Jr. led the 20 car field to the green with Everidge jumping to the early lead. Landis and Tommy Cook made their way through the field with Landis taking the lead on lap six. Tommy Cook moved inside Landis on lap seven and the two veterans put on a classic side by side battle to lap 25 when Landis back to the point. Cook backed off until lap 40 when he dove under Landis again and they raced side by side for the next 15 laps.
At the halfway mark, it was Landis, Tommy Cook, Jason Dietsch, Al Cook and Everidge. Dietsch moved around Cook for second on lap 59 and began to pressure Landis. Dietsch took over where Cook left off as he and Landis raced side by side for many laps. On lap 83, Dietsch’s hopes for victory ended with a spin off of turn two.
On the restart, Tommy Cook moved inside Landis again and they were side by side until lap 95 when Landis gained the advantage. Landis looked like a sure winner until his engine blew coming down for the white flag, ending his night. Tommy Cook was able to hold off brother Al on the restart and capture his first Gold Cup in front of a frenzied hometown crowd. Kevin Todd was third followed by Derek Bischak, and defending race champion Rob Buckley. Everidge, Colin Toland, Doug True, Mike Kugler and Matt Hall rounded out the top ten.
Tommy Cook was the Aluminum Racing Products - Corrigan Oil Fast Qualifier with a time of 17.65 seconds around the ˝ mile paved oval. He also split the AllStar Performance-Lane Automotive Hard Charger Award with Todd with Landis receiving the ARP Hard Luck Award. Toland was the winner of the Penske Shocks “Shocking Move of the Race”.
The SUPERPRO Series moves to the Angola Motor Speedway on August 23 for the running of the Dietsch Sales and Service 75 presented by Randercar Racing. The Series then moves to Springport Motor Speedway on August 30. For more information, go to the web at www.superproracing.com.
