Full Version: Modifieds on Slicks.....any interest?
Michigan Short Track Racing Club > Race Tracks > Pavement Tracks
Clemenskid21
I have been talking to Joe Dewitt about a possible modified race on slicks, after the points season is over with. This would take place towards the end of September. I am posting to see if anyone outside of AC would be interested in coming over and playing.

We are trying to put together a fun event. I know I enjoyed racing on the big slicks a couple of times a year, but Dixie has gone away with that.

The rules would be simple, if you are legal at your track you are legal here.

50 laps
Basic 2400 lb weight rule
8 inch wheels
used super later tires, 25, 35 or 45
no tire soaking, no mirrors or radios
aluminum heads, rear coil-overs ok

Just trying to compile a list of drivers that would be interested. If we could get 25-30 cars I will move forward to try and establish a decent payout, and get a date set. I am aiming for this to be $800-$1000 to win with other contingencies

Again this is going to be something fun, If you have a mod, and would consider showing up, please just leave a post here so I can put a list together for Joe, and also start to round up tires.

Any input would also be appreciated

Thanks in Advance

Here is a list of drivers I have already interested:

Nick Clemens
Joe Hodgeson
Tony Brabbs
Steve Thomas
Donny Matteson
Dave Christensen
Johnny Belott
Chaz Pray

Others I can guess would be there:
Chuck Silva
Rick Wiecorek
Rod Laney
Mark Abee
Don Morse
Ken O'Connor
Travis Eddy
Mike Currie
Mike Luburda Sr.
John Beach
Jeff Reamer
Don Gilbert
Matt Szecsodi

Nick,

We do this @ Spartan, Springport and the Zoo. It is run what you brung for mods only @ Spartan & Springport.

But @ the Zoo, Call of the Wild, it is what ever you have, just bring it. Last year Nyle and I were the only mods who ran with the SLM and we both made the show. Nyle was 4th & very fast.

Wings, boards, what ever, lots of fun with no pressure for points.

Was way cool to see this dirt SLM , trying to break Randy Sweets all time track record of about 10.85. He ran 4 laps w/o letting off, big kahonas on that dude, He missed it by about .003

I would be interested if it is like the ones we run over here. Run what ya brung shows, no rules except no radios or mirrors.

I am willing to entertain any idea, I would like to keep this as simple as possible so that we can get as many cars as possible.

Run what you brung would be kind of exciting!

If I can get enough interest, and a general consensus on rules either run what you brung or the ones previously stated, I will move forward. I would like to keep this race modified exclusive though.

Count me in.

We have some with just a few more laps Any drivers at Auto City can hook you up. Also, for testing if you put Bubba in the car for some laps, I will sponsor the car with tires. Send me a message.

So here is the outline, this is not set in stone yet, I am still working things out with Joe Dewitt

Here is what I have proposed:

Sept 27, 2008 with the Super Shoe at AC
50 Laps with no fuel stops

Rules:
2400# after race
USED 3035 and 3045
NO TIRE SOAKING
8" steel wheels
No Radios or Mirrors
Aluminum Heads and Coilovers allowed with no penalty.
5 1/2" x 66 Max Spoiler
(Basically just mount tires and go racing)

Registration would be $20 at the gate, which would just be added onto the purse.

Joe is also considering just running this as part of the Run What U Brung "Super Shoe" that is already scheduled. This would mean that ALL half mile cars would be racing against each other. I am trying to convince him to run the Mods separate. This is why I need to show him that there is enough interest to run us separately. I already have 19 drivers committed. I think only three are from Spartan, Springport, Kalamazoo, Whittemore, or Owosso. If there is anyone interested please post or message me. Sept 27 does not conflict with any of the end of the year Invitationals so that shouldn't be an issue. This is going to be something fun, and should be pretty competetive. When we ran these slicks at Dixie they seemed to be an equalizer, and made for a very competetive field. Also, Just a side note I hot lapped on some used 45, and 56 and consistently ran 15.60s at AC. Nothing like Bolting on 6-8 tenths!

Here at Hickory The Street Stocks, LLMs and Trucks all run on Used late Model 10 inch slicks, they are impounded every week and you can get 2 more tires every week for 60 bucks, every 4 weeks you can get 5 more for 125 bucks, the cars arnt much faster than the old 8 inch Goodyears and it costs less than 1000 bucks a season, its the way to go

RICK AND TALKED ABOUT IT AND A 8 INCH RIM WITH A 10 INCH WIDE TIRE IS GOING TO BE PUSHING IT. IF YOU ARE WILL TO GO 10 INCH RIM AND TIRE COUNT US IN, BUT IF YOU ARE USING A 8 INCH RIM NEED TO BE ON A 8 INCH SLICK LIKE WE HAD TO USE WHEN WE WENT TO KINROSS A FEW YEARS BACK. WE HAVE A SET IN THE GARAGE NOW FROM THE LAST BIG TIRE SHOW ON 10 INCH RIMS AND THEY BULGE OUT ALOT AT THE SIDE WALL NOW. CANT SEE PUTTING ONE ON A 8 INCH WHEEL. TELL YA WHAT RICK AND I ARE GOING TO DIXIE FOR PRACTICE IF NO RAIN TOMMORROW AND IT WILL GET ONE OFF THE 10 INCH RIM AND PUT IT ON A 8 INCH RIM AND TAKE IT WITH USE TOMMORROW AND FRIDAY NIGHT AT DIXIE. JUST OUR INPUT.

I have had them on 8" wheels and they worked great, it was a little more work mounting and dismounting, but It was well worth it.

Just so you know....Bob Varney at RV Performance is selling SETS *(4 TIRES) used from his ASA Shows for $20 bucks a set
Kevin 05
Anyone have a phone # or e-mail address for Bob ??
cas11
We have decided to not run this show. The tires on the 8 inch rims that we run will not fit on our car. Best of luck to the rest of you.

Thanks,
racinray75
Same here, Plus do we think it is a good idea to put 10"slicks on stock spindles and small bearings?? Just wondering... it would make me nervous after I thought about it. My opinion is that you don't want that front end to "hook up" that good!

Ray
Kevin 05
Ray, back in the Thunder Mods days we ran the wide slicks on the stock spindles and I don't remember and issues. But I'm also not sure we had all the horses we have now, or the ability to hook them up either. There are guys that run the Kazoo "Call of the Wild" show with 10" + slicks and side boards and the likes and I don't believe anyone had issues last year.
circusracer
They did it at Dixie a few years ago without incident. But I know that I wont make it. I have ran on slicks before, the newer the faster. I cant buy four new slicks for just one race, the budget is over drawn as is. You can bet that there will be guys putting on four brand new ones. I am pretty sure that I would need some different offsets to clear my frame in spots, and I dont want to beg or buy the correct rims. Sounds like a blast though, I would like to do it.

I have been running a mod for +20 years now and have run wing and or side boards at many tracks from flat tracks like Galesburg, to tracks like Angola & Springprot, Tri-City and Kalamazoo with fast corners.

I have NEVER had any spindle or bearing issues. Those who have concerns with this, just remember that the GM spindle for the Impala is the same one used on Astro Vans that weigh a lot more than a 2500lb race car.

Just check your bearings and re-pack with good grease and you will be fine.

The one thing many overlook is the rotor, as many guys tend to use a cheap rotor that they buy @ one of the big box auto parts stores, beacause and I quote, (they will warranty them for me when the pad wears them out) I say BS, they won't warranty your car after the rotor breaks and you biff the wall.

Check your rotors for cracks and replace with the best you can buy.

I agree with you Dan,spindles are not or have ever been a problem. I won't run the race anyway. 8 inch wheels do not fit well and I have 10 inch wheels in the back room for the outlaw shows. WHy have rules anyway for a race like this? I may do the no rules show at the Zoo. A board and slicks will make for a grin that lasts 50 laps. That is gonna be fast as hell I bet I am leaving soon for the ZOO with the mod in a few minutes. Anyone know how many cars showed for practice yesterday?
racinray75
Thats cool, I guess I am use to running the big stuff on the super. Just looking at the stock stuff makes me nervous lol. but I have been wrong before.

Ray
cas11
Gov, I am with you on the rotors!
RowZ
Just talked to Dan, and Harry Foote told him 40 lates and 10 mods practiced at the Zoo last night.
As of 12 noon the pits were filling up fast!

New tires will not be permitted, and I will talk with Joe about 10" wheels, and slicks, or sideboards, maybe open this thing up a little and get some more interest.....possible make it a run what you brung for the mods.....what does everyone think?....the rules are not yet set for this race so it is still possible to adjust to get full participation from as many teams as possible. And also, at Dixie we never had any spindle problems with the slicks, so that shouldn't be an issue if they are properly maintenanced.
Kevin 05
I think if you open it up you would get more cars out,, Also Kazoo "Call of the Wild" run what ya brung is the 20th. So you may get some of those guys over if they didn't have to to much more than change gears, and could leave the wing and things on.

Jeremy,

I just talked to Joe, 10" wheels will be allowed, the rules are basic 2400# and 3035, 3045, or 3056......and no new tires!
Also Joe said he is looking for it to pay $800 to win

also modifieds will be allowed to run the quarter mile show as well, as long as you weigh enough.
I am going to run my car in both races.

Hopefully this clears everything up.

Nick

Hey Chuck,
will you guys be able to run this show if 10" slicks are allowed
mod24
when is this show agin. Im not going to race but think this will be interesting to watch 3gears.gif popcorn.gif
MPR72
Springport had their "outlaw" show last sat. I ran 10" slm A/R slicks on 8" rims, no problems
Ran around 16 flat for being a 16.5+ setup. PD had a sprint wing, nose board and 10" slicks
on alum w-5s w/adapter ***bad fast**** quald at 14.955, while EM hit 14.885 in the feature
w/ 10" slicks, BIG sideboard, nose board and 8-12" spoiler. What a blast sticking to the track
and going alot faster than regular nights. What do they say------- ohhh yah---
JUST DO IT
MPR72 DODGE This......

Yes it is true. I am going to run my car in both, as long as everything goes well, I am not going to even change the gear.
STROKE421
WE PLANED ON TAKING BOTH CARS, NOW WE JUST HAVE TO FIND ANOTHER SET OF RIMS TO USE.
