Just curious, I know that Gaerte recommends them for all engines now, and I like that they have a nut welded to the end to make them easier to remove. I've heard that they dont have paper guts though, so I'm wondering what they look like inside.
I've got a stash of Wix's to make it through the year on, but I might switch over next year if I hear something favorable.
Anyone?

I have been using Jomar Performance Product oil filters for the last 5 years on my GM crate motor car. Best quality for the money, more paper filter area than K&N. Not a fiberglass filter like Wix. Also has No Bypass, oil will always flow through the filter.

I've been using them and for the most part they are great. I have had one small issue. When I take them off a couple of times the rubber seal sticks to the motor. (yes i oil them b4 putting them on.) You need to check that when you use the K&N, or youll have a big mess when you put your oil back in. Trust me on this one. Advance will give me any filter other than K&N and I still buy a 15 dollar K&N. The motor is the biggest investment inside the car protect it at any cost.

I run the high quality Carquest filter in my ride, but because I run alky, I change oil much more often than most. And filter every time.
I have cut a few open and never found anything in them, and typically my oil looks new when I drain it, so I am probably an anomaly. But I got into the habit of doing so because of the alky/water issue.
Just thought I'd throw that into the mix. Never considered running a K&N oil filter, but do run the K&N air filter. Two seasons on my latest one, cleaned every three weeks and still does the job.
have a good day,

Thanks guys, I'm mostly curious if anyone knows what the media looks like in the filter. The description of it that I read was kinda strange sounding.
I'm not looking for advice about changing, just curious about what this one filter is like inside. No offense but the Earl Gaerte stamp of approval goes pretty far in my book.
Chad do you have any old ones? I would like to cut one open if you wouldn't mind putting it in a ziplock bag and dropping it off somewhere (I don't make it to Burton often, and I'm guessing you don't make it to Fenton much either, but I could figure something out)

I change my oil every night. I run Valvoline straight 50wt. I use the Wix-carquest racing shortie oil filters. Part# 185069. Just cheap insurance for an investment I had to live in my truck for hauling freight 3 months straight to pay for. Thankyou Team Luberdas. Buckshot and Sr. are talking me into trying Mobil1 15-50 synthetic. Anyone else run it? I also dump in a bottle of part# 12345501 GM camshaft and lifter prelube with every oil change. I would probly

in my soup if anything ever happened to that motor .

Have run Mobil 1 since I started racing. Have 2 engines go bad in 8yrs, one from way to big oil clearance and one from
a broken crank, no oil problems though. Have run both 10/30 and 15/50 w/ WIX filter.
Had the intake off from a 6yr old motor and there was no real wear on the cam.
Just don't leak that oil under your tires, it is VERY slippery.

there we go! That's what I was looking for. Media doesn't look any different to me. I was picturing something that looked more like a really tight scotch brite based on what I read on one of the websites.
That looks just like a Wix media. The leaf spring is interesting, and the inner core looks like a wix too.
Thanks patrick.

NAPA R series or Carquest are actually Wix filters. As far as race oils many have changed their formula to eliminate or reduce ZDDP (zinc) levels. You should be using a min. 1200ppm zddp oil in any race engine. Mobil 1 historically was one of the best but if you read their labels today they are removed the "racing" recommendation on their labels. Mobil 1 took out the zinc in order to keep it on the shelves at Walmart, Meijers, etc per new EPA regs. You can mix your own brew but beware some of these "zinc" mixes won't last long and break down.
Brad Penn is a great partial syn with good ZDDP, full syn's include Royal Purple, Amsoil, Gibbs, Schaefer's. Selected Valvoline brands still have ZDDP but read their labels first. They have some "performance" marketed oils that aren't intended for endurance racing.
You shouldn't have to change your oil every week with a good filtration system. The Cup and Indy teams are getting over 500 miles @ 200 mph and up to 10,500 rpms with no oil breakdowns with the same good race oils you can purchase for your short track motor. If you have issues on a 30-50 lap weekly short track engine then other problems exist withing the motor or filter system.

Gavin,
I am slightly late but I thought you might like this site. This guy has cut apart almost every filter he could find and shows exactly what is in them.
The filters he uses are for the 2.2/2.5/2.0 dodges but the construction is all the same just the threads and size's are different.
If you click the link it takes you directly to the Mobil 1 filter talk.

Their actually not made by the purolator guys at all

They are made by Champion Labs.
If you were to click the link above it shows an excellent chart on who makes what filters.

It's ok, I'm sorry my message came off as kinda shrewd lol I read it here and realized it was kinda condescending sounding. That wasn't my intention at all and apologize if you read it the same way I did!!
I honestly didn't know jack about filters (except I liked the little black grippy things on frams

) until I read the link I posted.
