Press Release by Brandon DePew
AMS Honors Legends as Hall of Fame Returns
Angola Motor Speedway
August 16, 2008
(Fremont, Indiana)

Saturday Night was Napa Auto Parts Night at the Angola Motor Speedway as the Hall of Fame returned to the speedway after a 16 year absence. During intermission many drivers and car owners from the past and present were honored for their support of the Angola Motor Speedway since its opening in 1964.

The Superior Auto Modifieds were first on track for their 25 lap feature event. Scott Moyer grabbed the top spot from Mike Murphy in the opening lap and had the car handling very well early. Fast qualifier Justin Kazmar spun on lap 3 and would have to battle his way back through the field. Erik Shaeffer was charging as he took over second on lap 17 and closed right up on Moyer. A late caution brought up a green, white, checker finish but Shaeffer didn’t have enough as Scott Moyer held him off for his first win of the 2008 season. Mike Murphy had a great run to come home third, Rick Coe was fourth, and Jason Timmerman rounded out the top five. Gilbert Little and Kale Asztalos picked up heat wins.

The Budweiser Super Late Models were up next for 30 big laps. Veteran Fred Elkins started on the pole but Justin May would take the top spot and open up a big lead on the field. Elkins and Brian Huntley battled hard for the second spot with Huntley taking the spot on lap 16. Jack Landis was looking for another victory but contact with Brian Nester sent him to the pits with six laps to go. A late restart saw Huntley peek to the inside of May but he was too strong as Justin May held him off for his first career win in the Budweiser Super Late Model division. Huntley held on to the second position , Joe Ellert was 3rd, Fred Elkins 4th, and Craig Everage was 5th. Jeremy Hamilton and Joe Ellert were the heat winners.
Rookie Brent Dirrim looked to be the class of the field in the Jonny on the Spot Street Stock feature but he was too far under his qualifying time and received the black flag on lap 8. Jerry Carpenter was the new leader but he had a pair of Henderson’s all over him. Zach Henderson passed cousin Robby for second and grabbed the lead from Carpenter with ten laps to go. Robby would get up to second spot but that was all he had as Z. Henderson took his car to Tri State Line-X Victory Lane for the second time in 2008. Justin Oberlin, Brandon Pulver and Bob Thompson also finished in the top 5. Oberlin and Doug Crager won the heats.

Clif Bennett had problems all night but had it running at full song in the Smith Enterprises Mini Stock feature. Bennett slid under Justin Dubois for the lead on lap five but soon had last weeks feature winner Jason Weaver right in his tracks. The two cars had a great battle but Bennett couldn’t hold on as Weaver took the top spot and ran away with it. Weaver picked up the win in the final feature on Napa night while Bennett, Kedrin Holliday, Logan Parker, and Kyle Moonen all had top 5 finishes. Kyle Moonen and Logan Parker took the checkers in the heat races.

Saturday night August 23 catch the Super Pro Late Model Series in action at AMS with a big 75 lap feature presented by Dietcsh Sales and Service. Also on the schedule are the Superior Auto Modifieds, Jonny on the Spot Street Stocks and Smith Enterprises Mini Stocks. Gates Open at 3:00 Practice at 4:00, Time Trials at 6:00, and racing at 7:30.
